Abbott Freestyle Libre

Abbott Freestyle Libre uses flash glucose monitoring technology to monitor the blood sugar levels of those with type 1 diabetes. It is a small device which can monitor glucose levels throughout the day and night. Monitoring blood sugar levels is an important part of managing diabetes, and devices such as these are important in your treatment plan.

Glucose monitoring can help your and your doctors to understand how certain lifestyle factors such as diet or stress may be affecting your blood sugar levels. It can measure your glucose levels overtime to see if there has been changes or if they’re increasing or decreasing. This also allows you to see if the medication you have been prescribed to control glucose levels is actually working or if you need alternative medication. As the device monitors levels throughout the day and night, you can see if there are differences when you sleep at night.

Diabetes is a long-term and life threatening condition and this device can help you manage your condition and give you peace of mind. You can buy Abbott Freestyle Libre online at Doctor-4-U.

How does flash glucose monitoring technology work?

To record glucose levels throughout the day and night a small sensing device is applied to the skin. The sensor is applied to the upper arm with one part inserted under the skin, and the other part (sensor) sits on top of the skin. Applying the sensor causes very little pain, no more than a finger prick. To collect glucose readings the sensor is scanned with a reader, this is painless and the sensor can be scanned over clothing. You can scan throughout the day and the reader with provide you with readings from the past 8 hours, current glucose readings, and trends in glucose levels. There are also apps and software available to keep track of these readings.

Flash glucose monitoring technology measures glucose levels from interstitial fluid under the skin rather than from blood. This technology reduces finger pricking, however, you may need to do a finger-prick test occasionally when you need the most accurate reading.

Who can use Abbott Freestyle Libre?

Abbott Freestyle Libre is to be used by diabetic patients over the age of 18 as part of their diabetes treatment plan to manage their condition.

Who is Abbott Freestyle Libre not suitable for?

Abbott Freestyle Libre may not be suitable for those who are at risk of giving inaccurate results. This device should not be used by children or adolescents under the age of 18. Seriously ill patients should not use this technology as they’re likely to give inaccurate results. Certain substances may also interact with the device and cause inaccurate readings such as vitamin C and salicylic acid. Interference with readings will depend on how much of these substances you’re taking.

Discuss with your doctor if you’re taking any medication or substances before using this device to rule out anything that may cause interference with glucose levels.

Using Abbott Freestyle Libre while pregnant

Abbott Freestyle Libre has been approved for use by pregnant women. Pregnant women are more at risk of high and low blood sugar and it is vital that diabetes is still managed during pregnancy. This method of monitoring glucose levels has proved to be a less stressful, less painful and more comfortable experience for pregnant women.

How effective is Abbott Freestyle Libre at managing diabetes?

Abbott Freestyle Libre does not alter glucose levels in any way, it is not a form of treatment, but it is a way of monitoring levels so you can plan a course of action based on readings to lower blood sugar levels if they’re too high, or increase levels if they’re too low. This device can accurately detect glucose levels although it doesn’t take readings from blood.

In certain situations the Freestyle Libre may not be accurate and you will need a finger-prick test to check glucose levels from blood. This may be if you’re experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia and need to confirm if you’re having an hypoglycemic episode. This device does not alert you when you’re having a hypo or hyper, this can only be detected when the sensor is scanned. However, its ability to monitor glucose levels throughout the day and night is crucial to managing diabetes.

The benefits of this device for diabetics

Flash glucose monitoring has changed the way diabetes is managed and treated. Diabetics can now monitor their condition 24 hours a day if they need to with this device so they can better understand their condition. Other advantages include:

  • Easy to use, and pain-free device
  • Reduce the amount of finger-prick tests
  • See trends of when your blood sugar levels are low and high
  • Improve diabetes management
  • Keep track of your levels at night
