Aizea

Aizea is a contraceptive which contains a single hormone, progesterone, and is used as a method of preventing pregnancy. Contraceptives which contain this hormone alone are known as minipills. This medication can be used by women who are breast-feeding and is more likely to stop ovulation compared to other minipills available.

  • You should take ONE tablet at the same time each day
  • If you miss a dose or take your tablet more than 12 hours later than you should, read the patient information leaflet or speak to a GP or pharmacist for advice, as you may not be protected against pregnancy.
  • If you experience vomiting or severe diarrhoea, this medication may not work effectively. Because of this, it's recommended that you use condoms or other barrier methods for 7 days after you've experienced illnesses like these.

What is Aizea?

Aizea is a single-agent hormonal contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. It is a progestogen-only pill (also known as a POP or minipill) which means it contains one type of hormone, whereas some other contraceptives contain two hormones including oestrogen Aizea does not feature oestrogen which can make it more appealing to women who are either breast-feeding or cannot tolerate this particular hormone.

How does Aizea work?

Aizea contains desogestrel, which is an artificial version of the hormone known as progesterone. It’s main purpose, like with other minipills, is to prevent sperm cells from entering the womb and reaching an egg cell to fertilise it.

The level of progesterone naturally falls during ovulation, which moves egg cells to the womb and prepares them for potential fertilisation. But when Aizea alters the hormone levels, it makes the body think that ovulation has already occurred, preventing eggs from ripening and being delivered to the womb.

With progestogen-only pills, however, it’s not guaranteed that all eggs will be prevented from ripening. Therefore, for additional protection, this drug also increases the density of vaginal mucus. This makes it harder for sperm to travel through the womb and reach any egg cells. The level of progesterone contained in Aizea means it should be able to prevent ovulation in most cases.

How do I take Aizea?

These tablets are taken once per day at about the same time. They should be swallowed whole, with water. Each strip contained in a pack has 28 tablets, covering 4 weeks’ supply. The days of the week are printed on the back of the strip to make it easier to keep track of where you’re up to with your daily tablets. Continue to take the tablets each day until the whole pack is completed.

When is the right time to start using Aizea?

If you are not currently using any other hormonal contraception and have not used any in the past month, then you should start using Aizea when your period begins. It’s preferable to start taking these tablets on the first day of the period, but it is also fine to start on days 2 to 5 of your period. If you do start after the first day though, then use an additional barrier method of contraception during the first 7 days of tablet-taking.

If you are switching over to this medication from a combined pill, vaginal ring or transdermal patch, then you can start using Aizea the day after you have completed use of this other medication. If you are switching over from another progestogen-only pill, then you can start this treatment right away.

If you have recently had a baby, then you can start using this medication between 21 and 28 days after the birth of your baby. If you start later, make sure that during the first cycle you use an additional barrier method of contraception during the first seven days of tablet-taking.

What are the side effects of Aizea?

Numerous side effects have the potential to appear while using Aizea, but not every patient will experience them. The most commonly reported side effects for this medication include the following:

  • Mood changes
  • Decreased sexual drive
  • Headaches
  • Acne
  • Nausea
  • Breast pain
  • Weight increase

Other potential side effects, some of which can be serious, are possible but also much rarer. You should speak to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible if you experience any side effects, particularly if they are severe or last for an unusually long time.

Can I take Aizea?

There are certain medications you may be taking or health conditions you have which could create complications in regards taking Aizea. You should avoid using this treatment if any of the following applies to you:

  • You have a blood clot in a blood vessel within the legs or lungs (a thrombosis)
  • You have or have previously had either jaundice or severe liver disease and your liver is still not working normally
  • You have or are suspected of having a cancer that grows under the influence of sex-steroids (such as certain types of breast cancer)
  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • You’re pregnant or think you may be pregnant

Let your doctor or pharmacist know if you are currently taking (or have recently taken) any other medications, since some may stop Aizea from working properly. In particular, you should highlight the following if you use these:

  • Medication for treating epilepsy (such as phenytoin, carbamazepine or primidone)
  • Medication for treating HIV (such as ritonavir)
  • Medication for treating tuberculosis (such as rifampicin)
  • Treatments for stomach upsets (such as medical charcoal)
  • Herbal remedies that treat depressive moods (such as St. John’s Wort)

What if I take more Aizea than I should?

There have not been any reports of serious harmful effects occurring as a result of taking too many Aizea tablets at once. You may, however, experience some symptoms including nausea, vomiting and slight vaginal bleeding (the latter is more likely if you’re young).

What if I forget to take Aizea?

The best thing to do when you forget to take a tablet at the time you were meant to depends on how late it is. If you remember about taking your medication when it is less than 12 hours late, you should take a tablet as soon as you remember and then take the next ones at the usual time. You’ll still be protected from pregnancy.

If you remember your medication but you’re more than 12 hours late taking a tablet, then take the tablet when you remember but you may not be completely protected against pregnancy. The more consecutive tablets you miss, the greater the risk of falling pregnant following sex is. When you have taken your overdue tablet, take the next ones at the usual time. This could mean taking more than one tablet within one day, which shouldn’t be an issue. If you do forget a tablet, then include an additional preventive method, such as a condom, if you have sex within the next seven days.
