Alli weight loss

Being overweight or obese has many health risks, and is one of the leading causes of cancers and other serious health problems in the UK. According to the NHS around 1 in 4 adults in the UK are obese. The way obesity can be determined is by your body mass index (BMI) measurement which calculates whether you’re a healthy weight for your height. Generally, if you have a BMI of 25 to 29.9 you’re classed as overweight, and a BMI over 30 is classed as obese. However, this may not always be the case and there are other ways of diagnosing obesity.

If you’re in the obese or overweight category losing weight will significantly reduce your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancers such as breast and bowel cancer. If you’re struggling to shed the pounds, alli can help you lose the extra weight to help you get a healthy weight and BMI.

How does alli work?

The active ingredient in alli called orlistat, which is also available in a stronger form under the brand name Xenical, works by stopping fat from being absorbed in the body and stored in various parts of the body such as the tummy, legs, hips and arms. It does this by blocking chemicals known as lipases which break down and digest the fat that enters the body so that the fat passes out of the body instead of being absorbed and stored.

Alli reduces about a quarter of the fat from being absorbed, however, it does not work alone. For every 2lb you lose, alli can help you lose an extra 1lb providing you’re also making efforts with a healthy low calorie diet and healthy eating. You can achieve better weight loss results when this medicine is used in conjunction with other weight loss methods, the more you work the more alli works.

How to take alli

To help your body adjust to this new change you should firstly start your low calorie diet before you begin taking these weight loss tablets. You should take one alli capsule three times a day around each meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner), alli only works when taken with a meal so if you happen to miss a meal ensure that you don’t take an alli capsule.

Alli diet pills should not be solely relied upon to lose weight and they should not be taken for more than 6 months. Taking alli should be temporary but you’re habits should be long term. Get yourself into healthy eating and lifestyle habits now so you’re able to maintain a healthy weight when you stop taking alli. Alli is a way of helping you reach your target weight loss goal.

Alli dosage

Alli is available in 60 mg capsules that are taken three times a day, and they should only be taken by adults over the age of 18. However, you can get generic orlistat which is stronger at 120mg and is available on prescription. Read more about orlistat here.

Who is suitable to take alli?

Alli is suitable for adults over the age of 18 who are overweight or obese, this will be checked by your doctor or pharmacist to ensure that alli will be beneficial to you, if you’re not overweight taking alli is not necessary and may be unsafe for your health. Your weight is determined by a number of factors and there is no one size fits all, your doctor or pharmacist will look at your height and overall health and determine whether your weight is unhealthy. In general, if you have a BMI over 25 you may be overweight or possibly obese and alli will be suitable for you.

Who should not take alli?

However, alli may not be a suitable weight loss method for everyone who is overweight. Always ensure you read the patient information leaflet before taking alli and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you’re concerned alli may affect your health or interact with any other medicines you’re taking. There may be some factors which prevent you from taking alli, for instance if you have any of the following you should not take alli diet pills:

  • Allergic to orlistat or any other ingredient in alli
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • If you have cholestasis
  • If you have problems absorbing food

You should also be cautious of taking alli if you have diabetes or kidney disease.

Alli should not be taken by children or adolescents under the age of 18.

Taking alli while pregnant or breastfeeding

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should not take alli. It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women and you should avoid taking this medicine. If you discover you’re pregnant while taking alli you should stop taking it right away.

Taking alli with other medication

Before taking alli you should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you’re taking any other medication to avoid interaction between the drugs and unpleasant side effects. In particular, you should not take alli with ciclosporin, warfarin, or any other blood thinning drugs. You should also be cautious of taking alli with any of the following medicines and speak to your doctor first, these include:

  • Amiodarone
  • Acarbose
  • Thyroid medicine
  • Medicine for epilepsy
  • Medicines to treat HIV
  • Medicines for depression, psychiatric disorders or anxiousness
  • High blood pressure medicines
  • High cholesterol

It’s important to know that alli may affect the effectiveness of the oral contraceptive pill if you have severe diarrhoea as a side effect, speak to your doctor about what to do if this were to happen.

Alli side effects

Like all medicines, alli does have some side effects, although not everyone will experience them. If you experience any of the following side effects or there are any negative changes to your health while taking alli you should inform your doctor or pharmacist and stop taking this medicine if the side effects are severe.

The following side effects are commonly experienced when taking alli and have been reported by around 1 in 10 people, these include:

  • Wind, sometimes with oily spotting
  • Frequent and sudden bowel movements
  • Soft stools
  • Fatty or oily stools
  • Stomach pain
  • Incontinence
  • Runny/liquid stools
  • Anxiety

You can reduce the chances of side effects or the severity by eating less fatty foods, the less fat you intake the less fat that needs to be passed out of the body.

How long does alli take to work and is it effective?

The more effort you put into losing weight the more alli will work. If you’re sticking to your low fat and calorie diet you’re more likely to see quicker results. With a healthy diet and exercise you could start seeing results within two weeks. The more high fat meals you eat the more your weight loss will be delayed. Do not take alli for more than 6 months and continue your diet and exercise regime long after stopping alli to maintain the healthy weight you’ve achieved. Alli is intended to support your weight loss goals.
