What is Almotriptan?

Almotriptan tablets are taken to treat the symptoms of a migraine. The medication does not stop migraines from occurring, but by taking it when the condition first emerges, it can allow patients to resume their usual activities and reduces the need to take other medicines. Almotriptan may be alternatively sold as Almogran tablets.

How does Almotriptan work?

This drug contains what are known as selective serotonin receptor agonists. They help to treat migraines by constricting blood vessels in the brain, which returns them to normal sizer and prevents pain signals from being passed into the brain. This also stops the release of certain natural substances which are responsible for the feelings of pain and nausea associated with a migraine.

How do I take Almotriptan?

Almotriptan is only meant to be taken by adults aged 18 or over. When a migraine attack begins, a single 12.5mg tablet is taken as soon as possible. They are still effective even if they’re taken at a later stage.

Tablets are swallowed whole with liquid (such as water) and they can be taken with or without food. You should not take more than one tablet for the same migraine attack even if symptoms do not subside.

If you experience a second migraine attack within 24 hours, then a second tablet can be taken in response to this, provided you leave at least two hours between your first and second tablets. Two tablets are the maximum dose you can take within 24 hours.

What are the side effects of Almotriptan?

You may never experience side effects while taking Almotriptan but some are possible and certain symptoms are more commonly reported than others. The most commonly reported side effects associated with this medication include the following:

  • Dizziness
  • Sleepiness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Tiredness

Other side effects are possible but also rare. Some of the rarer ones can be serious though, so it’s best to tell your doctor, nurse or pharmacist as soon as possible if you experience any side effects that are concerning. You should stop taking this medication and contact your doctor or hospital emergency department right away if you experience chest pain, tightness in your chest or any other symptoms that resemble a heart attack.

Can I use Almotriptan?

Before you start using this treatment, you should check that you do not have any conditions or other health-related circumstances which may make using it ill-advised. Do not take Almotriptan if any of the following applies to you:

  • You have previously suffered a heart attack
  • You have or have had chest pain or discomfort that normally occurs with activity or stress
  • You have or have had chest pain that occurs when resting
  • You have or have had severe hypertension
  • You have uncontrolled mild or moderate high blood pressure
  • You have or have had heart problems without pain
  • You have had a stroke or experienced a reduction in the blood flow to the brain
  • You have had obstruction of the large arteries in the arms or legs
  • You have a severe liver disease
  • You are taking other medicines to treat migraines such as ergotamine, dihydroergotamine and methysergide
  • You are under the age of 18

You should also tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines that you’re currently taking, as certain ones could create unintended side effects if used at the same time as Almotriptan. In particular, you should highlight these treatments if you’re using them:

  • Almotriptan – this should not be used at the same time as ergotamine-containing medicines (which are also used to treat migraines)
  • Medicines used to treat depression (such as monoamino oxidase inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or serotonin noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors
  • Herbal remedies that contain St John’s Wort

You should also check with your doctor if you’re ok to use this medication if you are either pregnant, breast-feeding or you are over the age of 65. Data is very limited on how this medication impacts pregnancy or breast-feeding but taking precautionary steps with your doctor is the best action nevertheless. It is worth speaking to your doctor if aged above 65 as you are more likely to experience blood pressure increases.

What if I use too much Almotriptan?

If you accidentally take more of this medication than instructed, or if someone under 18 takes it, then contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department immediately.

What if I forget to take Almotriptan?

Try to take this medication as prescribed, as Almotriptan works most effectively just after a migraine attack begins to take place. If you do miss a dose, then don’t take a double dose when you do remember to make up for a forgotten tablet.

Dosage Instructions
12.5 mg, dose to be taken as soon as possible after onset, followed by 12.5 mg after 2 hours if required, dose to be taken only if migraine recurs (patient not responding to initial dose should not take second dose for same attack); maximum 25 mg per day.
