What is Propecia and what does it do?

Propecia is a tablet indicated for the treatment of hair loss in men, also known as androgenetic alopecia. It contains the active ingredient finasteride which is a type of 5a-reductase inhibitor.

Propecia works by decreasing the levels of DHT in the scalp, which is a hormone closely linked to thinning of the hair.

When is Propecia prescribed?

Propecia may be prescribed to men who suffer from the early stages of male pattern baldness. Even though male pattern baldness, also known as hair loss, does not pose a risk your health, many patients choose to seek treatment for the condition.

Propecia tablets are only indicated for use in men over the age of 18. It may be prescribed to prevent further hair loss and to encourage and increase hair growth on the scalp.

Is Propecia suitable for my condition?

Propecia may be suitable if you have mild to moderate hair loss as the result of male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness is characterised by a receding hairline, followed by thinning of the hair on the crown of the scalp and temples.

Please note, Propecia will not regrow hair if you suffer from complete hair loss. Certain medicines and conditions may affect the suitability of this treatment.
Do not use Propecia if any of the below applies to you:

  • If you are a woman.
  • If you are a man under the age of 18.
  • If you are allergic to finasteride or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.
  • If you are already taking finasteride or dutasteride to treat prostate problems.

What is the recommended dosage of Propecia?

You should follow the doctor’s instructions on how to take this medicine. The doses outlined below is for your reference only. The tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. Do not crush or chew the tablets.

Propecia doses for men

The recommended dose is 1 tablet daily. Keep taking Propecia for as long as instructed by the doctor.

Please note, there is no evidence to suggest that an increased dose will increase the efficacy of this treatment.

Does Propecia cause any side effects?

Yes. All medicines can cause side effects and Propecia is no exception. However, not everyone gets them. It is important that you read through the section about side effects in the patient information leaflet before you start taking Propecia. This will help you to spot any signs of an allergic reaction should you get one.

Propecia may cause the below side effects. The frequency of these are unknown.

  • Breast swelling or tenderness.
  • Heart palpitations.
  • Pain in the testicles.
  • Depressed mood.
  • Less desire to have sex.

Please note, the above is not a complete list of possible side effects. Consult your GP immediately if you notice any changes in your breast tissue, such as lumps, pain or nipple discharge.
