What is Anusol HC?

Anusol HC is a medication used to relieve discomfort and irritation caused by haemorrhoids (also known as piles). This treatment can be taken as either a suppository or via an ointment. In either form, this medication contains several functioning agents which work to sooth the inflamed area, prevent infection and facilitate healing.

How does Anusol HC work?

Anusol HC contains a few antiseptic ingredients including zinc oxide, balsam peru and bismuth oxide. Zinc oxide is able to reduce swelling in an area affected by haemorrhoids. Balsam peru promotes the growth of healthy skin, supporting the recovery of areas damaged by haemorrhoids. Bismuth oxide reduces irritation, making it easier for patients to live with their condition until it fully disappears.

This medication also contains benzyl benzoate, which is another antiseptic ingredient, as well as a corticosteroid called hydrocortisone acetate which aids the treating of inflammation. All of these ingredients mentioned are in the suppository and ointment versions of Anusol HC.

How do I take Anusol HC?

If you are using the suppository version of this medication, then remember to wash the anal area and dry gently with a soft towel before using this medication. Remove the plastic cover from the suppository before use and wash your hands before and after using this treatment. During use, a single suppository is inserted into the anus far enough so that it doesn’t slip out. The suppository will melt after insertion. The suppositories are usually used once in the morning, once in the evening and after each bowel movement. No more than 3 suppositories should be used in a single day and this treatment shouldn’t be used for more than 7 consecutive days.

When using the ointment version of Anusol HC, similar preparation to when using the suppository is applied. A nozzle is supplied with the ointment which can be used to apply the medication into the back passage. The ointment should be applied sparingly to the affected areas when required. For external piles, the ointment is applied using a gauze dressing. For internal piles, the nozzle is prepped and screwed on to the medicine tube, before inserting it into the back passage and squeezing the tube gently.

Like with the suppository, the ointment is typically applied once in the morning, once in the evening and after each bowel movement. Do not use this ointment for more than 7 consecutive days and do not use more than 4 times in one day unless prescribed otherwise by your doctor.

What are the side effects of Anusol HC?

Like with all medicines, Anusol HC can cause side effects but they are a rarity with this particular treatment. The following side effects have occasionally been reported due to using this medication:

  • Burning, redness, irritation, itching or pain following application of this medication. This does not usually last more than a few days.
  • Blurred vision
  • Hypersensitivity reactions (such as a rash). If this occurs, then stop using this medication and visit your doctor or hospital emergency department as soon as possible.

Can I use Anusol HC?

Before using Anusol HC for the first time, there are a few things that are important to check. If you are experiencing rectal bleeding (a symptom that can occur when you have haemorrhoids), then you should check it with your doctor to rule out more potentially serious causes.

You should also speak to your doctor or pharmacist if your symptoms do not improve or get worse after 7 days of using Anusol HC. You should also tell one of them about any other medication you’re currently using (or have recently taken), as some may alter the effects of Anusol HC. For instance, your doctor may wish to monitor you carefully if you are currently taking medicines for HIV, like ritonavir.

Avoid using this medicine if you have fungal, viral or bacterial skin sores or if you are either pregnant or breast-feeding.

What if I use more Anusol HC than I was meant to?

If you accidentally use more of this medication than you were supposed to, then contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department as soon as possible. When seeing a doctor, take the medication with you plus the information leaflet if possible.

What if I forget to take Anusol HC when I was meant to?

If you ever forget to use this treatment, then don’t panic and just use it on the next occasion that you are supposed to. If you are using the suppository, do not insert a double dose to compensate for a missed one.
