Armour Thyroid

Armour thyroid is a prescription-only medication used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) which means the body does not produce enough thyroid hormones causing symptoms of tiredness, weight gain, muscle aches and weakness, and even depression. Armour Thyroid is a type of natural desiccated thyroid that replaces the low T3 and T4 hormones to reduce these symptoms.

This medicine is not available to request via our online service. If you are still having trouble with your symptoms please visit the NHS website for services in your area.

What is natural desiccated thyroid?

Natural desiccated thyroid is taken from the dried and powdered thyroid glands of animals such as pigs and cows, therefore it is a more natural way of replacing these hormones. Many people prefer these natural products as opposed to the synthetic version of the hormone, and have reported fewer side effects.

Natural desiccated thyroid contains both thyroid hormones known as T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine), as opposed to a synthetic version called levothyroxine which doesn’t contain the T3 hormone.

This type of thyroid medication is the earliest form and was the only option available at one point until the 1970s when synthetic forms such as levothyroxine and liothyronine were introduced.

Who is Armour thyroid suitable for?

Armour thyroid is given to those who are not able to naturally produce enough thyroid hormones, a condition called hypothyroidism. This medication may also be used in the treatment of other types of thyroid disorders and thyroid cancer.

Some people may not be suitable for synthetic thyroid such as levothyroxine, or they may be experiencing side effects of this type of thyroid medicine, or it is simply not effective enough to relieve their hypothyroid symptoms, this is when natural desiccated thyroid such as Armour thyroid may be a more suitable treatment.

Who should not take Armour thyroid?

Natural desiccated thyroid may pose risks for some people, and should be used with caution. You should tell your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients in Armour Thyroid and if you’re allergic to pork. Allergic reactions can be serious and life threatening so it’s important to avoid this medicine if you’re aware of an allergy.

Those who have cardiovascular problems should take greater caution when it comes to taking this medicine, especially those who are at risk of heart disease such as the elderly. Older patients are also more likely to feel side effects such as chest pain, and an irregular heartbeat. If you have any problems with the heart such as coronary artery disease, angina pectoris, or an irregular heartbeat, Armour Thyroid may not be a suitable treatment for you, or your dose may need to be altered.

Armour thyroid may also cause complications or increase symptoms of those with health conditions such as diabetes, or if you have adrenal problems or problems with your pituitary gland.

This medicine should only be used to treat an underactive thyroid and should not be used if you have an overactive thyroid.

While thyroid hormone deficiency is common amongst the elderly, it’s not recommended that adults over 60 should take natural desiccated thyroid hormone.
