Atrovent

Atrovent is a medication used by patients with asthma or similar conditions such as bronchitis. It is taken with an inhaler and prevents narrowing of the airways in the lungs to ensure easier breathing. When prescribed this medication, it is usually inhaled on a daily basis.

This medicine is not available to request via our online service. The only treatments that we can prescribe for asthma are Ventolin, Airomir, BricanylSalamol, and the Salamol Easi-breathe Inhaler. If you are still having trouble with your symptoms please visit the NHS website for services in your area.

What is Atrovent?

Atrovent is an inhaler treatment for people with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The medication contained in the inhaler is an anticholinergic bronchodilator which allows easier breathing for patients.

How does Atrovent work?

When this medication is inhaled, it helps to make breathing easier by relaxing the muscles around the airways. The inhaler this treatment is kept in is used on a daily basis as a method of preventing symptoms from developing. If symptoms ever emerge in the form of, say, an asthma attack, then treatment from a reliever inhaler (like salbutamol) will be used instead.

How do I use Atrovent?

You should use the inhaler containing Atrovent in the way your doctor has told you. You can read the product’s information leaflet for detailed instructions on how to use and maintain the inhaler device. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you’re unsure about anything regarding using the inhaler. Just before using the inhaler for the first time, test fire it twice into the air before inhaling any medication. Repeat the test when the inhaler has not been used for 3 days or more.

In regards the doses to take, the typical directions for adults is one or two puffs to be inhaled on three or four occasions daily. Sometimes, during early treatment, up to four puffs at a time may be taken. When used by children aged 6 to 12 years old, the recommended dosage is one or two puffs to be inhaled three times daily. For children under 6 years old, the dosage is one puff to be inhaled three times daily. Children should be supervised by an adult while using this medication.

How do I clean the Atrovent inhaler?

It’s important that you regularly clean the inhaler that administers your medication to ensure it keeps working properly. When ready to clean the device, you should first remove the canister and cap, before washing and cleaning the white mouthpiece in warm soapy water. Rinse in warm water and allow to air-dry without using any heating system. Be sure that the small hole in the mouthpiece is washed through properly. Once the white mouthpiece is dry, replace the canister and the cap.

What are the side effects of Atrovent?

Atrovent can cause side effects, but not all patients will get them. The most commonly reported side effects include the following:

  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Stomach upset or discomfort plus nausea
  • Cough and throat irritation just after using this medication

Other potential side effects are a rarity, but some of them can be serious. If after taking Atrovent you are wheezy or have other difficulties with your breathing, do not take any more of this medication (unless asked to by your doctor). You may require a fast-acting reliever inhaler. Your doctor may decide that a different medication is required to treat your condition.

Another rare side effect is an allergic reaction. Signs of this can include a skin rash, itching, swelling around the mouth and face, tightening of the throat, sudden breathing difficulties and a drop in your blood pressure. If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction, or you have unusually fast or uneven heart beats, then seek medical help straight away.

Can I use Atrovent?

Before ordering or using Atrovent, you should ensure that this medicine is suitable for you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this treatment if any of the following is relevant to you:

  • You are pregnant, think you’re pregnant or currently breast-feeding. It is advised that you do not take Atrovent if any of these apply to you.
  • You have glaucoma, or have been told that you may develop it
  • You have troubles passing urine
  • You’re a man who has a prostate problem
  • You have cystic fibrosis

If you are taking (or have recently taken) any other medicine, tell your doctor or pharmacist about them to check using Atrovent is still ok. It’s particularly important to mention these treatments if you are using them:

  • Other anticholinergic medicines including those that treat COPD (like tiotropium), irritable bowel syndrome (like mebeverine), urinary incontinence (like oxybutynin) or coughs (like dextromethorphan)
  • Other inhalers that help to make breathing easier, such as a reliever inhaler like salbutamol
  • Medicines called ‘Xanthines’ that help with breathing. Examples include theophylline and aminophylline

What if I take more of this medicine than I should?

If you inhale more Atrovent than you should, then contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department right away. Take with you all of your inhalers and other medicines you’re taking when seeing a doctor. Symptoms which could develop if you inhale too much of this medication include having a dry mouth, blurred vision and a rapid heart rate.

What if I forget to take this medicine?

If you forget a dose of Atrovent, then inhale it as soon as you remember it, unless your next dose is nearly due. If it’s close to your next dose, then simply skip the one you forgot. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
