Avamys

Avamys is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Avamys (fluticasone furoate) belongs to a group of medicines called glucocorticoids which are a type of steroid. This medicine alleviates the unpleasant and uncomfortable symptoms of rhinitis including, itchy, runny or stuffy nose, watery, itchy or red eyes, and sneezing by reducing inflammation. Rhinitis causes inflammation in the nose due to the body’s reaction to an allergen such as pollen, this is known as allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis can happen occasionally throughout the year at times when the pollen count is high, and in some cases the symptoms can be so severe that prescription medication such as Avamys is necessary. Avamys is available in the UK by prescription only and as it contains steroids you should speak to a doctor before using it.

How does Avamys work?

Avamys is a man-made type of corticosteroid that we have naturally in our body. When the immune system detects something which it considers to be a threat to the body, it causes inflammation. Sometimes the immune system mistakes something to be a threat and reacts too strongly to it which can cause severe and dangerous symptoms. Corticoids are used to reduce inflammation by suppressing the chemicals that are released to prompt inflammation when the body is responding to an allergen. Glucocorticoids calm the immune system’s response to substances which are usually harmless to the body.

Who is Avamys suitable for?

Avamys is suitable for those who suffer from persistent reactions to certain triggers such as pollen and dust mites. Avamys provides relief for those who suffer from severe symptoms which hinder daily activities. If you’ve been diagnosed with rhinitis, Avamys is a suitable treatment for you.

Who is Avamys not suitable for?

This medicine may not be suitable for everyone, and some may need to find alternative treatment for their allergic rhinitis. There are a number of factors which may stop you from using this medicine, for instance if you’re taking other medication which may interfere with Avamys or worsen the side effects you shouldn’t take this medicine. Avamys is also not suitable for children under the age of 6 years old.

If you’re allergic to fluticasone furoate or any other ingredient in Avamys it’s important that you do not use this medicine as allergic reactions can be dangerous and sometimes life threatening.

Taking other medications with Avamys

You should always tell your doctor if you’re taking any other prescription or non-prescription medication, particularly the following:

  • Other steroid medicines including tablets, injections, or creams
  • Medicines for asthma
  • Medicines that treat HIV - ritonavir or cobicistat
  • Fungal infection treatment called ketoconazole

Can you use Avamys while pregnant?

It has not been established whether Avamys is safe to take while pregnant or breastfeeding. You should always take the advice of your doctor before using this medicine. Your doctor should only prescribe this medicine if the benefits are greater than the risks, so it is advised that you consult a doctor or pharmacist before using this medicine if you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

What are the side effects of Avamys nasal spray?

As with all medications there are some side effects, however, not everyone will experience side effects when using the nasal spray. There are some common side effects which can occur in up to 1 in 10 people, and there are also some rare side effects which occur less frequently, as little as 1 in 10,000 people. If you experience any side effects related to taking this medicine you should stop use and consult your doctor.

Common side effects

Side effects which occur more frequently include:

  • Nosebleeds
  • Nasal ulceration
  • Headache

Uncommon/rare side effects

In rare cases the following side effects may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people:

  • Pain, burning, irritation, soreness or dryness inside the nose
  • Perforations in the ridge inside the nose that separates the nostrils
  • Slow growth in children
  • Blurred vision or temporary changes to vision

You’re more likely to experience side effects if you’re using this medicine long term. Using corticosteroids for a long period of time at a high dose can affect the way the body naturally produces these hormones in the body. This is why it’s not recommended for use in young children as it can affect their growth.

How to use Avamys nasal spray

Before using Avamys nasal spray shake the solution vigorously so that it becomes a liquid. Adults and children over 12 years of age should spray the liquid twice in each nostril once a day. The dose for children under 12 but over 6 years of age is one spray in each nostril once a day. Once symptoms are under control you may be able to reduce the dose.

Blow your nose before using the nasal spray and slightly tilt your head forward. Place the nozzle inside the nostril and inhale through the nose as you press the button to release a spray. Repeat the process in each nozzle and clean the nozzle after each use.

How effective is Avamys?

Avamys can effectively relieve the symptoms of rhinitis. It is most effective when treatment begins before being exposed to the allergen, for instance you should start using this medicine before the pollen season starts to keep symptoms under control. Avamys begins to take effect within 8 to 24 hours but the full effect may not be felt until a few days later.
