What is Balneum Cream?

Balneum Cream is a treatment for dry skin conditions including eczema and dermatitis. When applied to the skin it is easily absorbed, relieves itching and provides a soothing effect. The cream helps to prevent loss of skin moisture, making it a suitable medication for those with very delicate skin. No artificial colourants, fragrances or preservatives are contained in this treatment.

How does Balneum Cream work?

Balneum Cream contains Urea among its ingredients. This substance is found naturally in the skin and it helps the skin retain water. Many people who have skin conditions such as eczema have a less than normal amount of urea in their skin, so Balneum cream can help by replacing it.

This cream can also replace much-needed oils in dry skin and also create a soothing and softening effect in areas the cream is applied. By hydrating the skin in these ways, it stops being itchy and dead skin is removed from the body too. The cream has been shown to increase skin moisture for up to 24 hours.

How do I use Balneum Cream?

Using clean hands, apply a small amount of this cream to the affected area and gently rub it in. This is to be done twice a day until the symptoms have eased.

It would be a good idea to use this cream not that long after taking a shower or bath in order to keep the skin moisturised. Pat the skin dry in this scenario, as rubbing the skin will remove some of the moisture layers that have built up during prior uses of this cream. When patients are looking for treatments for a skin condition, it tends to be helpful if they avoid bathing in hot water and avoid the use of harsh soaps.

If you are using Balneum Cream to treat a specific skin condition, then make sure your doctor is aware that you’re using this treatment. If you apply this cream to broken or inflamed skin, it may cause irritation as a side effect. Avoid applying this treatment to mucous membranes and the eyes.

What are the side effects of Balneum Cream?

Like with all other medicines, Balneum Cream can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them. There are no side effects associated with this treatment that are particularly common, but there is some possibility you may experience certain types of irritations in treated areas which make it feel like the treated skin is getting worse rather than better.

You may ultimately experience redness, itching, a burning sensation or the formation of pustules on the treated skin. If you are treating inflamed skin, then the cream may possibly make your eczema worse. In rare cases, this cream could trigger an allergic reaction, depending on whether your body has an issue with any of the ingredients contained in the medication. The condition getting worse or swelling around the head or other parts of the body are common signs of an allergic reaction to medication.

If you experience any side effects while using this treatment, speak to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible.

Can I use Balneum Cream?

Before you start using this treatment, you should establish whether or not you have any medical conditions that will prohibit you from using it. Certain conditions you might have could potentially be made worse if you use this treatment, or the effects of this medication may be diminished by certain conditions.

You should avoid using this cream and speak to your doctor for advice if any of the following applies to you:

  • You are suffering from severe and widespread reddening of the skin
  • The affected area of skin has become inflamed all of a sudden or has started oozing or is showing other signs of infection

This cream may not be suitable for you to use if you have a soya or peanut allergy. Inform your doctor if you have either of these allergies or if you have any other type of allergy to certain foods, drugs or other things.

Speak to your doctor in advance if a child of yours will receive treatment from this cream, or if you are either pregnant or breast-feeding. This cream should not be applied on to the breasts immediately prior to breast-feeding.

Inform your doctor also about any other medications that you are currently taking before you start Balneum Cream. In particular, this treatment may affect other topically applied medicines (applied to the body surface) you’re currently taking such as corticosteroids, dithranol and fluorouracil.
