Bazuka Extra Strength Gel

Bazuka is a common and effective treatment for the removal of warts, verrucas, corns, and calluses. It contains salicylic acid, which helps to soften the affected growth and make it easier to remove.

The treatment can take up to 12 weeks to completely remove the skin problem, but persevering with the treatment often proves to be effective for most people.

Warts and verrucas are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are contagious. You should start treatment with Bazuka as soon as you know you have a wart or verruca in order to minimise the chances of transmission.

Bazuka is generally well-tolerated and there are no known interactions with other medications. However, if you’re concerned about using the gel or aren’t sure if you’re able to treat your skin growth with it, ask your local pharmacist or GP for advice.

Prices start from £12.99 for one tube

What is Bazuka?

Bazuka is a popular, topical treatment for warts, verrucas, corns, and calluses. It contains salicylic acid which helps to peel away the skin, eventually softening the growth and making it easier to remove. Bazuka also helps to kill the virus that causes warts and verrucas.

How do I know if I have a wart, verruca, corn, or callus?

It can sometimes be difficult to tell what your skin growth is, but there are a few ways of identifying what the problem is at home.

Warts can happen anywhere on the body, but are most common on the hands and feet. They’re caused by a virus and can be passed to other people or other parts of your body by touching contaminated surfaces or having close skin contact with the growth. Warts aren’t usually painful but might be itchy or embarrassing.

Verrucas are also caused by a virus, but these only appear on the soles of your feet and often have black spots under the skin. They’re also contagious and often picked up from places where affected people have been walking barefoot (such as swimming pools). Verrucas may also cause some pain when walking. Both warts and verrucas are caused by the human papillomavirus (HIV).

Corns and calluses aren’t contagious or caused by any virus. They’re hard growths of skin that are often caused by ill-fitting shoes, but they can also occur on the hands, especially in the case of those who play instruments and have built up their calluses over time.

Can I use Bazuka anywhere?

No. There are some places that you definitely shouldn’t use Bazuka, even if you have warts in those places. These include your:

  • Armpits
  • Breasts
  • Buttocks
  • Genitals
  • Face

Despite being a wart treatment, Bazuka shouldn’t be used to remove genital warts under any circumstances. If you suspect you might be suffering from these, please visit your local GUM clinic or GP as soon as possible.

Bazuka is mostly recommended for the treatment of warts on the hands and feet.

Can I use Bazuka?

As Bazuka is a topical treatment, most people are able to use it to remove warts or verrucas, but you should take caution and speak to your doctor first if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Diabetes
  • Poor circulation to hands and feet
  • Unsure if you have a wart, verruca, or growth that’s suitable for Bazuka treatment.
  • If allergic to any of the ingredients in Bazuka

How do I use Bazuka?

Bazuka is a fairly easy treatment to use, you just need to take caution to the area where it’s applied. Bazuka should only ever be applied to the affected area and not to the healthy skin surrounding it as this can cause irritation and tenderness. Other than this, there are some simple instructions for using the gel.

  • Soak the affected area in warm water for a few minutes and then dry it thoroughly.
  • Apply 1-2 drops of Bazuka gel to the wart, verruca, corn or callus.
  • Let the gel dry and leave it on for 24 hours. It will form a water-resistant and protective film where it’s been applied.
  • The next evening, peel off the film that the gel created and repeat the process

Once a week, you should rub over the growth with a pumice stone to remove some of the skin before applying Bazuka again.

Bazuka should be used once a day, usually in the evening or before you go to bed. Allow the gel to completely dry before allowing it to touch any fabrics, as the acid may permanently damage them.

Try to avoid the gel coming into contact with your eyes or other mucous membranes. If this does happen, rinse with lukewarm water and then seek immediate medical attention.

What are the side effects of Bazuka?

Some people experience side effects when using Bazuka, though others either don’t notice anything or only feel mild symptoms. As Bazuka is a topical treatment, any side effects should be localised to the area of application. The most commonly reported symptoms are:

  • Tingling
  • Mild tenderness
  • Irritation to healthy skin if accidentally applied to it

You should also avoid using the gel on any broken skin or to areas where you suffer from skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, acne or similar.

How long does Bazuka take to work?

In most cases, Bazuka might take up to 12 weeks to remove the wart or verruca, and you should continue using treatment throughout this time. If after 12 weeks you haven’t seen an improvement, you should see your doctor to discuss alternative treatments or even get the growth tested for other conditions. However, Bazuka is an effective treatment for most people.

What other treatments are available for warts?

If your wart or verruca is resistant to treatment, your GP may suggest getting it frozen. This means that it should drop off within a few weeks. In some areas of the UK, this treatment is available on the NHS.

Your GP may also refer you to a dermatologist to find the cause of the wart or to start more rigorous treatment under the care of a specialist.

What can I do to avoid passing on warts or verrucas to others?

There are certain things you can do whilst you’re affected by skin growths caused by viruses. They include:

  • Always washing hands after contact with a wart or verruca
  • Changing your socks daily
  • Covering the growth with a plaster if you go swimming
  • Not cutting a wart
  • Not sharing towels, socks or shoes
  • Not walking barefoot whilst affected
