Beclometasone Nasal Spray

Beclometasone nasal spray is a popular medication that’s often used to treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis associated with hay fever and other allergies.

It can help to relieve:

  • Sneezing
  • A runny nose
  • Itchy nose
  • Blocked nose

Beclometasone nasal spray reduces inflammation at the source, ultimately relieving you of your symptoms whether you suffer from a seasonal or non-seasonal allergy.

This treatment might take a few days to work, so if you know that you’re going to be exposed to an allergen, it might be a good idea to start taking it a few days beforehand so that you’re protected in enough time for your symptoms to be less severe.

Beclometasone nasal spray

Beclometasone nasal sprays are a popular treatment for symptoms of allergic rhinitis. It helps to relieve sneezing, nasal itching, a runny nose and blocked nose when these symptoms are caused by an allergen or irritant in the nasal passage.

Beclometasone in the form of a nasal spray is easy to use, and often doesn’t require a prescription, as it can be bought over the counter at most pharmacies in the UK. However, you should still take care when you buy beclometasone nasal spray, as it is still a medication and shouldn’t be abused.

Beclometasone nasal spray is suitable for both seasonal and non-seasonal allergies, as it can help to relieve inflammation in the nasal passage regardless of the allergen that causes it.

Unfortunately, this medication might not be suitable for everyone, including those that are under the age of 18, and people that have an allergy to beclometasone. In addition to this, you should also speak to your GP or local pharmacist If you have any of the following heath conditions or problems, as beclometasone nasal spray might not be the best treatment for you:

  • Kidney problems
  • History of glaucoma
  • Nose infection
  • Sinus problems
  • Recent nasal surgery
  • Recent nose injury
  • Nasal ulcers

Hay fever nasal spray

Beclometasone is one of the most popular hay fever nasal sprays due to the fact that it’s so easily available, and generally very well tolerated. In addition to this, it is usually effective for mild to moderate symptoms of allergic rhinitis without needing to involve a doctor.

Other hay fever nasal sprays are available, and often contain some form of corticosteroid similar to beclometasone in order to effectively reduce inflammation locally.

How does beclometasone nasal spray work?

Beclometasone is a type of corticosteroid, and is also available as an inhaler to treat asthma. Like most steroids, beclometasone works by mimicking a hormone that’s naturally produced by the adrenal glands. It works within the immune system to reduce inflammation at the source, which in the case of allergic rhinitis, can also reduce symptoms such as sneezing, or a runny and itchy nose.

Although beclometasone reduces inflammation, it works in a different way to ibuprofen or other NSAIDs.

Because beclometasone nasal spray only reduces inflammation, this means that it’s safe to combine your treatment with an antihistamine such as cetirizine or loratadine in order to reduce the amount of histamine that your body produces in response to an allergen. Combined, these treatments can help to reduce your symptoms of hay fever and other allergies even more.

Beclometasone side effects

Although beclometasone nasal sprays are available without a prescription from a doctor, they can still cause side effects in some people.

Luckily, beclometasone nasal sprays are generally very well-tolerated and don’t produce adverse effects in many people. However, it’s still important to know about what it can do to your body so that you can be aware of any changes that occur due to using beclometasone.

Some of the side effects listed in the beclometasone nasal spray patient information leaflet include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Dryness
  • Nose and throat irritation
  • Unpleasant taste and smell
  • Nose bleeds
  • Increased pressure inside the eye
  • Glaucoma
  • Hole or perforation in nasal septum

With some of these side effects, there are certain things you can do to ease them. For example, if you notice an unpleasant taste in your mouth after using the nasal spray, you can reduce this by drinking water or chewing gum.

If you notice any of the more serious side effects such as nose bleeds or changes in your vision, you should stop using beclometasone until you’ve seen your own GP for advice. They may advise that you stop using it for a while or reduce your dosage.

You may be more at risk of experiencing side effects if you’re also taking any medication that can interact with beclometasone. Because of this, we advise that if you take any of the following medications, you should speak to your own GP about whether treatment with beclometasone nasal spray is suitable for you or not.

Interacting medications include:

  • Cobicistsat
  • Ritonavir
  • Any other form of steroid medication, including inhalers, tablets, injections, or creams

How to use beclometasone nasal spray

Beclometasone nasal spray is easy to use, and doesn’t require any medical supervision. Before you use it for the first time, the spray will need priming. You can do this by pumping the mechanism into the air several times until you notice a fine mist. When the mist appears, the spray is primed and ready to use.

The recommended dosage for adults is 2 sprays in each nostril, twice a day. However, may use less than this, especially if your symptoms have improved after a few weeks. You should never use more than 8 sprays in total in one day.

It’s usually recommended to gently blow your nose first to get rid of any mucus that may be in your nostrils before using the spray. After this, you should bend your head forward slightly and insert the nozzle of the spray into one of your nostrils. Close off the other nostril with one finger, and start breathing in gently, with the bottle in an upright position.

Whilst the nozzle is inside your nostril, you should continue to breathe in slowly whilst pressing down on the pump mechanism to release a spray into your nose. Breathe out through your mouth or avoid expelling any of the medication.

You should repeat this step in the other nostril, and then repeat the process again so that you’ve had a total of 4 sprays. This should be done twice a day if you’re taking the maximum dose.

After using the spray, you should clean the nozzle with a tissue or slightly damp piece of kitchen roll in order to keep it free from bacteria and prevent blockages in the spray hole.

Generic Beconase

Beclometasone nasal spray is a generic form of Beconase – a popular treatment that contains the same active ingredient and works in the same way.

Beconase is a branded version of beclometasone nasal spray, and is often recognised as a trustworthy brand. However, Beconase can often cost more than the generic version due to the fact that it’s a brand.
