Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray

Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray contains medication which can reduce inflammation, swelling and irritation in your nose caused by hay fever or other kinds of allergies. The spray contains a type of steroid which can help prevent sneezing and leave you with a nose that is less blocked or runny than it was previously. Whether you are vulnerable to seasonal allergies like hay fever or year round allergies which are caused by things like animals or dust, both kinds when triggered often cause symptoms that affect the nose in particular. Beconase Aqueous is designed to be easy to use and it can be prescribed to both adults and children.

What is Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray?

Beconase Aqueous nasal spray is a treatment used for relieving symptoms of hay fever or other types of allergies. It can be used to prevent and treat inflammation in the lining of your nose (rhinitis) and reduce other symptoms affecting the nose such as swelling, itching, and sneezing. If allergies cause your nose to become blocked or runny, then this nasal spray can help with this issue as well.

How does Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray work?

This nasal spray contains a medicine called beclometasone dipropionate, which is classed as a steroid (or a corticosteroid, to be more specific). Steroid medicines like this one have an anti-inflammatory effect, which makes them very useful to fight against seasonal allergies like hay fever and year round (perennial) allergies such as those triggered by animals.

Inflammation and other symptoms around the nose are commonly experienced by people affected by hay fever and other allergies. Therefore, corticosteroids are popularly used by patients to help cope with the condition.

Can I safely use Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray work?

If you are someone who struggles with symptoms of hay fever or other allergies, then Beconase Aqueous nasal spray may prove a very effective treatment. There aren’t many circumstances which could make it unsafe to use this medication. However, you should check with your doctor or local pharmacist if you’re definitely ok to use Beconase Aqueous nasal spray if any of the following applies to you:

  • You have at some point in the past had an operation on your nose
  • You have had steroids for a long time, either as an injection or by your mouth
  • You currently have an infection in your nose
  • You are currently taking any other medication
  • You are pregnant, breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or planning to become pregnant

Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray can be used by adults and children, with the exception of children below the age of 6.

How do I prepare my Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray?

The spray has a dust cap which protects the nozzle and keeps it clean, so remember to take this off before using this treatment. If the spray is new or hasn’t been used for at least a few days, then it may not work on the first attempt. Therefore, you may need to ‘prime’ the spray by pumping it a few times until a fine mist is produced. Make sure the spray is pointed away from you when priming it. If further guidance is required, you can refer to the patient information leaflet (PIL) which comes with this spray. It contains detailed instructions on preparing and using this spray correctly.

Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray dosage instructions

When prescribed Beconase Aqueous nasal spray, it is used by patients on a daily basis. The usual starting dose is 2 sprays into each nostril twice a day. The maximum number of doses you can take in 24 hours is normally 8 (4 sprays per nostril). It is unlikely you’ll be needing to use this medicine for more than a month (unless instructed to do so by your doctor).

As your symptoms improve, your doctor may advise you to lower your dosage to 1 spray in each nostril twice a day. If your symptoms get worse, your dose may get put back to 2 sprays in each nostril twice a day. Do not take a higher dose than what has been recommended to you and do not stop taking this medicine unless you have been advised to do so by your doctor. In certain circumstances, such as during admission to hospital after an accident or before/after a surgical operation, your doctor or pharmacist may see fit to adjust your dose, but always follow their advice closely.

Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray side effects

As is the case with all other medicines, there is some possibility that Beconase Aqueous nasal spray could cause side effects, but most patients who use this medicine won’t notice any. Immediately after you use this spray, it’s possible you could sneeze a little, but this should soon stop. You may also very occasionally get an unpleasant taste or smell, but this again is short and temporary.

If you experience any serious symptoms, such as ones which indicate a severe allergic reaction to the medicine, then stop using this spray and visit a doctor or hospital emergency department right away. Ultimately, the chances of experiencing serious symptoms from using this spray are overall very low. Check the list of ingredients closely if you think there might be something in this spray which could provoke an allergic reaction.

The most commonly reported side effects associated with Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray include nose bleeds, a dry or painful nose/throat and mild allergic reactions which can include skin rashes and itchiness.
