What is Beconase and what does it do?

Beconase is a type of medicine in the form of a nasal spray that is used to alleviate the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and other allergies that particularly produce symptoms of sneezing, runny, itchy or blocked nose. Beconase nasal spray predominantly focuses on relieving symptoms in the nasal passage, but it can also help to ease irritation in the eyes. It contains the active ingredient, beclometasone diproprionate which is a type of corticosteroid.

How does it work?

The active ingredient in Beconase is a synthetic version of natural corticosteroid hormones in the body that control inflammatory responses. When sprayed into the nose, the anti-inflammatory corticosteroid stops the immune response to the allergen which may be pollen, dust mite, animal hair, etc, and this then reduces the swelling and irritation in the nasal passage. This corticosteroid medicine essentially control’s your body’s reaction to allergens which should normally be harmless.

Who is suitable to use Beconase nasal spray?

Most adults over the age of 18 will be able to use Beconase nasal spray if they’re struggling with the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. If nose and eye irritation is affecting your daily life, this medicine may be the solution to help manage your allergy so you can get on with daily activities symptom-free.

Who should not take this medicine?

For some people with allergic rhinitis or another allergy, Beconase isn’t the most appropriate treatment as they may have another medical condition that could be made worse by taking this medicine, or they’re taking other medicines which could interact with Beconase nasal spray. You must not take this medicine if you are:

  • Allergic to beclometasone or any other ingredient in this medicine, or you’ve had an allergic reaction to steroids in the past
  • Under the age of 18

In these circumstances, Beconase is not suitable and you should avoid taking this medicine.

You should also speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using Beconase if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have an infection or ulcers in your nose
  • You’ve recently had surgery on your nose or injured your nose
  • You’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to get pregnant
  • You have tuberculosis

Your doctor or pharmacist will determine whether it’s safe for you to take based on the information that you provide them with about your current condition and medical history. It’s important that you tell your healthcare provider is any of the above apply to you.

Beconase and pregnancy

Beconase nasal spray is not recommended for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying for a baby. It may only be prescribed if it’s absolutely necessary but your doctor will need to assess the risks and benefits of this medicine to you and your unborn baby or infant. Avoid this medicine if possible, if you need to take it, it must be prescribed by your doctor in these circumstances.

Can I take other medicines with Beconase nasal spray?

You must inform your doctor or pharmacist of any medicines you’re currently taking whether they’re prescription, non-prescription, or herbal. This is to ensure that there isn’t a risk of interaction with Beconase which may cause some unpleasant side effects if an interaction were to occur.

Beconase is not known to interact with many medicines but you should still tell your doctor about any medicines you’re taking. However, Beconase nasal spray must not be taken with other corticosteroid medicines, this includes topical steroid eczema creams, etc.

What are the side effects of Beconase?

Beconase nasal spray does have some side effects, as is the case with all medicines, although not everyone will experience these side effects and most are rare. This nasal spray shouldn’t cause any problems but some rare side effects may include:

  • Pain in the nose or nosebleeds
  • An unpleasant taste or smell
  • Dryness or irritation in the nose or throat
  • Eye problems such as pain or blurred vision

A serious side effect that very rarely occurs but it should be taken notice of is an allergic reaction. You will need to stop using the product immediately and seek emergency medical help if you’re experiencing severe symptoms such as swelling of the face and mouth, difficulty breathing, and a rash.

Tell your doctor if you’re experiencing any other side effects that aren’t listed on the patient information leaflet or if your symptoms have not improved within 7 days of taking this medicine.

Beconase dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take depending on the severity of your symptoms. The usual dose for adults aged 18 and over is two puffs to be sprayed into each nostril every morning and evening, this may be reduced to just one puff in each nostril if symptoms have reduced and you’re starting to feel better. Stick to the recommended dose and do no use more than eight sprays in one day.

How to use Beconase nasal spray

Before you use the spray shake the solution and remember to remove the dust cap, you may also need to pump the spray several times before you use it if this is its first use. You should then clear your nose by blowing it gently, then tilt your head forward slightly and close one nostril and place the nozzle in the other nostril. To spray, hold the bottle upright in the nostril and push down on either side of the nozzle. Before you spray begin breathing slowly and as you breathe in this is when you should take your first spray, then breathe out through your mouth, take your second spray and repeat in the other nostril.

Consult the patient information leaflet for more help on how to use this spray.
