What is Betacap?

Betacap is a medication used for treating skin conditions that occur specifically on the scalp. Diseases this treatment can be used against include psoriasis, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis. Appearing as a clear, colourless and slightly thickened liquid, Betacap is a cutaneous solution which can be used by adults, the elderly and children over the age of one.

How does Betacap work?

Betacap contains Betamethasone Valerate which is a strong and fast-acting corticosteroid. It is intended for use on the scalp, which typically does not respond well to weaker medicines of this nature.

The main benefit of using Betacap is that it reduces inflammation of the skin - a symptom of various skin conditions. The active ingredient, Betamethasone, achieves this by working on the inside of skin cells so that the immune system is unable to affect them by releasing the various substances responsible for the inflammation.

How do I take use Betacap?

Before using this bottle of medicine for the first time, you should turn the bottle cap anti-clockwise to break the seal. When this has been done, you’ll need to carefully turn the bottle upside-down over your head, holding the nozzle against the part of the scalp that needs treating.

Gently squeeze the bottle until the affected area of the scalp is coated with a thin layer of the solution. Next, gently massage the solution into the scalp to prevent it from running off. Allow the treated scalp to dry naturally, without the use of a hair drier. Remember to wash your hands after use. On days when you shampoo your hair, apply this medicine after your hair has been dried.

For adults (including the elderly), this process should be done twice a day (during the morning and evening) until your condition improves. When you notice your scalp condition is getting better, you can start to use Betacap less often. Your usage could go down to once a day or even less, as long as your scalp condition is kept under control.

If Betacap is being used on a child, then the instructions for use are the same but it should be used more sparingly compared to adults. When treating seborrheic dermatitis in children, this product should not be used for longer than 7 days.

If you are using this product to treat scalp psoriasis, it’s important that your doctor checks your progress regularly to minimise the risk of any possible complications occurring such as the rare side effects associated with this treatment.

What are the side effects of Betacap?

Like all other medicines, Betacap can potentially cause side effects but not every patient will experience them. When topical corticosteroids like this one are used in the right amount and for the correct length of time, they are usually well-tolerated. However, prolonged and excessive use of the solution, particularly on children or on skin that is bandaged or wrapped up can create some issues. Local skin thinning (making the skin damage easily) and adrenal suppression (a type of hormonal imbalance) can occur in these cases. Stopping treatment usually puts an end to these side effects.

In rare cases, the use of Betacap can cause certain serious side effects. If any of these occur, stop using this medication and seek medical help immediately:

  • Skin irritation
  • When treating psoriasis, a pustular form of the disease (consisting of blisters filled with pus) may develop.

Can I use Betacap?

Before you start using Betacap, you should check that no circumstances that mean the treatment should be avoided apply to you. This medication should not be used to treat skin that has been infected by viruses, fungi or bacteria. It should also not be used by patients under the age of one or to treat any scalp problems beside the one your doctor prescribes Betacap for.

It is usually not recommended that you use this product if you are currently pregnant or breast-feeding. You could speak to your doctor for advice on your best course of action if either scenario applies to you.

If you are currently using any other medicines, then they are unlikely to stop you from using this particular treatment. Betacap is not known to affect or be affected by any other medication. Nevertheless, it’s best to inform your doctor about any other treatments you are currently taking (or have recently used) before you use Betacap for the first time.

What if I use more Betacap than needed?

If you use more Betacap than required, then mop up any excess solution with a tissue (or something similar) and prevent it from spreading onto uninvolved skin areas.

What if I forget to use this product?

There’s no need to worry if you forget to use Betacap from time to time. Just use it at the usual times when you remember.
