Betnovate

Betnovate cream is a prescription medicine used in the treatment of skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. This medicine contains the active ingredient betamethasone valerate which belongs to a group of medicines called steroids. Betnovate is a topical corticosteroid which reduces inflammation and irritation associated with these skin conditions. Eczema and psoriasis are usually long term chronic conditions which can cause severe irritation, and in these cases topical corticosteroids are needed to clear eczema or psoriasis and reduce the painful and uncomfortable symptoms.

How does betnovate work?

The active ingredient in betnovate is a corticosteroid and corticosteroids are naturally produced in the body, one of their functions is to control inflammatory responses. When the body is exposed to an allergen or trigger, the immune system releases inflammatory chemicals which causes irritation. Corticosteroids stop the skin cells from releasing this inflammatory response and therefore reduces the redness, itching and swelling of eczema and psoriasis and eventually clears it completely

Who is betnovate cream suitable for?

Betnovate cream is suitable for adults and children over the age of 1 who have been diagnosed with either eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis. As betnovate is a steroid it may only be used when the condition is severe, if it’s at risk of becoming infected, or if emollients alone have had no effect and the symptoms are unbearable and not under control. Mild cases may be treated with other methods before moving onto steroid creams.

Who should not use betnovate cream?

There are a number of reasons why a person may not be suitable for this type of treatment. Topical steroids should be used with care and those who aren’t suitable for this type of treatment should avoid using betnovate cream. You should consult with our online doctors before using this medicine to determine your suitability. Medicine is usually not suitable if it interacts with other drugs, causes complications to someone’s health or worsen their existing health condition, of if they’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

Can you use betnovate cream while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Unless you have been advised otherwise by your doctor or pharmacist you should not use this medicine if you’re pregnant. Your doctor may feel that it is suitable for you but you should minimise absorption by only using small amounts on small areas. If you’re breastfeeding and your doctor has recommended using this medicine avoid using it on or near the breasts to avoid the substance coming into contact with your baby.

Betnovate cream and health conditions

Always ask a doctor if betnovate is suitable to take if you have other health conditions. As with any medication if you are allergic to any of the ingredients you are not suitable to take it. In the case of betnovate cream if you are allergic to betamethasone valerate or have had a reaction to any other steroid then this is not a suitable treatment for you.

Although betnovate cream is a treatment for skin conditions, there are some that should not be treated with this medicine. These include:

  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Perioral dermatitis (spotty red rash around your mouth)
  • Itching around the genitals or back passage
  • Infected skin
  • Itchy skin which is not inflamed

Betnovate cream may aggravate and worsen these skin problems and you should find alternative treatments for these conditions.

Betnovate cream and other medication

Before using betnovate cream you should tell your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking to avoid interference between the drugs. Betnovate is not known to affect many other drugs but you should still inform your doctor particularly if you’re taking ritonavir or itraconazole.

How to use betnovate cream

Take care when using topical corticosteroids and always follow the instructions of your doctor. Before applying the cream make sure that the affected area is clean and dry, you can then apply a thin layer of betnovate once or twice a day depending on the severity of your skin problem, over time the dose may be reduced once there is improvement. You doctor may suggest using a bandage or other type of dressing with the cream but not everyone will be suitable for this as it increases the amount of absorption. After applying the cream wash your hands thoroughly to prevent transferring the cream an area that isn’t affected unless your hands are the affected area, in which case let the cream soak in. The dose will be different for children, they will use less cream as long term use of steroids may affect growth in children.

Are there any side effects of betnovate?

All medications have some side effects, however, not everyone will experience them. There are side effects of betnovate, some are common and there are some that are very rare. It’s quite common for people to feel a burning sensation, pain, irritation, or itching when using betnovate cream. Other side effects have more serious risks but they are very rare, these include:

  • Increased risk of infection
  • Allergic skin reaction
  • Rash, itchy, bumpy skin or redness of the skin
  • Thinning and dryness of the skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Blood vessels under the skin becoming visible
  • Increase or reduction in hair growth/ hair loss
  • Changes in skin colour
  • Weight gain
  • Slow growth in children
  • Thinning, brittle, weak bones
  • Cataract or glaucoma
  • Decrease in cortisol in the blood
  • Increased blood sugar levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Blurred vision

It’s also possible to experience an allergic reaction to this medicine, but again this is very rare. A reaction may show a rash or swelling on the skin, if this happens stop using the product and visit your doctor as soon as possible.

How long does betnovate cream take to work and is it effective?

Betnovate is effective within the first few days of using the cream and when your condition begins to improve you may be able to reduce the amount of times you apply the cream. If used correctly betnovate is a very effective treatment for eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis, and with proper management of this condition after this treatment you will avoid needing to use steroids long term.
