What is Bromocriptine Mesylate?

Bromocriptine Mesylate tablets are a medication which can be used to treat problems with fertility and periods. This treatment is classed as both a dopamine agonist and prolactin inhibitor. Because of its ingredients and abilities, this medication can also be used to treat non-cancerous tumours in the brain, diseases that cause too much growth hormone to be made and Parkinson’s Disease. But tackling fertility problems or issues with breast milk production are the more likely reasons someone may be prescribed Bromocriptine.

How does Bromocriptine Mesylate work?

Bromocriptine Mesylate tablets can reduce the production of certain hormones in the body which may be causing troubling symptoms. For instance, it can reduce how much prolactin is made in the body, a substance which can cause fertility-related problems such as unwanted breast milk, missed/stopped periods, difficulty becoming pregnant, decreased sexual ability and decreased sperm production.

This medication can also treat a type of tumour which causes high levels of prolactin (known as prolactin-secreting adenomas). If these exist on the body, then Bromocriptine can reduce the size of such tumours.

Additionally, Bromocriptine increases dopamine levels in the body, which can improve your ability to move as it decreases stiffness shakiness and unsteadiness. It can also be used to treat Parkinson’s Disease and decrease the number of episodes of not being able to move if a patient suffers from ‘on-off syndrome’ (a phenomenon which can occur when treating Parkinson’s with levodopa.

What is the dosage for Bromocriptine Mesylate?

Bromocriptine tablets are available in different dosages and the exact dosage instructions will depend on your age and condition. For most adults or their children requiring this medicine, the typical dosage will be up to 10mg or 20mg daily.

If you are a woman, then your doctor will advise you when in your menstrual cycle you should start taking this medication. If you are elderly, then your daily dosage may be less than what’s typically recommended for adults.
