Buccastem M

Buccastem M is a brand of medication that can help to relieve sickness and nausea associated with migraine headaches. It comes in the form of a buccal tablet that shouldn’t be swallowed whole or chewed. Buccastem M is a popular treatment for migraine sufferers that also experience nausea and sickness alongside their headaches, as it works within the brain to block messages that induce feelings of nausea.

Buccastem M tablets each contain 3mg of prochlorperazine – a phenothiazine drug that can be used for a range of conditions. However, Buccastem M is only recommended for those that suffer with nausea and vomiting as a result of migraine headaches.

Buccastem M might not be safe for everyone, even if you experience nausea with your migraines. You should avoid Buccastem M or speak to your doctor before you buy it if you have any of the following health conditions or problems:

  • Allergy to prochlorperazine
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Liver problems
  • Blood problems
  • Epilepsy
  • Parkinson’s
  • Glaucoma
  • Issues with your prostate gland
  • Under the age of 18
  • Elderly
  • At risk of a blood clot or stroke
  • Personal or family history of blood clots
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • AIDS

You should also take caution when considering Buccastem as a treatment if you’re taking any other medications that are known to interact with prochlorperazine. You should speak to your own GP or pharmacist before you buy Buccastem M if you’re already taking:

Tranquilisers

Temazepam
Atenolol
Propranolol

How does Buccastem M work?

Buccastem M works within a part of the brain that’s responsible for feelings of nausea and sickness, known as the vomiting centre.

When you feel sick, it’s because messages are being sent along your nerves which release dopamine and trigger the vomiting centre of your brain. Buccastem M works by blocking dopamine so that the signals of nausea are reduced.

What is Buccastem M used for?

Buccastem M is used to relieve the feelings of nausea that are specific to those that suffer with migraines. They can help to reduce feelings of sickness, but unfortunately can’t get rid of a migraine headache.

Prochlorperazine is the generic form of Buccastem M, and has more indicated uses than the branded version, including short term management of severe anxiety, treating and preventing nausea and sickness in those that don’t experience migraines, schizophrenia, labyrinthine disorders and acute migraine. However, if you’re looking to purchase treatment for any of these conditions, you should visit your own GP, as our GMC registered doctors can only prescribe Buccastem M for its indicated purpose – treating nausea and sickness in patients that suffer from migraines.

Buccastem for nausea

Buccastem M tablets are an effective treatment for reducing or stopping feelings of nausea during a migraine. The buccal tablets ensure that you don’t need to chew or swallow the medication whole, which may trigger a gag reflex in some particularly bad cases of nausea.

Buccastem M tablets are designed to slowly dissolve, providing relief from queasiness and feeling sick. Whilst they can’t provide relief from your headache, they can help to make your sickness slightly more bearable whilst you’re feeling ill with a migraine.

Buccastem M side effects

Buccastem M is generally well tolerated by most people, but some rare side effects have been reported with use of the medication. Side effects are symptoms that you experience as a result of taking a medication, rather than as a result of the condition that you’re using it to treat. Just because others may experience side effects doesn’t necessarily mean you will, and vice versa.

Some of the reported side effects include:

  • Jaundice (rare)
  • Blood problems (rare)
  • Breast swelling in males and females (very rare)
  • Milk production that’s unrelated to breastfeeding (very rare)
  • Absence of menstrual periods/amenorrhoea (very rare)
  • Restlessness or anxiety (very rare)
  • Drowsiness (frequency unknown)
  • Dizziness (frequency unknown)
  • Dry mouth (frequency unknown)
  • Insomnia (frequency unknown)
  • Agitation (frequency unknown)
  • Skin reactions (frequency unknown)
  • Photosensitivity (frequency unknown)
  • Low blood pressure (frequency unknown)
  • High blood sugar levels (frequency unknown)
  • Cholestasis (frequency unknown)
  • Abnormal movements, tremors and rigid muscles (frequency unknown)
  • Impotence (frequency unknown)
  • Ejaculation problems (frequency unknown)
  • Persistent or painful erections (frequency unknown)
  • Local irritation to the gum and mouth (frequency unknown)

If you experience any of these side effects and you find that they are unbearable or difficult to deal with, you should stop using Buccastem M and inform your GP. You may need to be prescribed another kind of anti-sickness medication if Buccastem isn’t suitable for you.

Because Buccastem M can cause drowsiness and dizziness, it’s recommended that you shouldn’t drive or operate machinery if this happens to you until the feelings subside.

As this medication can cause an increased sensitivity to light, you should always wear suncream whilst taking Buccastem. In addition to this, you may want to temporarily avoid being in direct sunlight. Some migraine sufferers may welcome this warning, as sunlight or bright lights are known to aggravate symptoms of a migraine.

In some rare cases, Bucacstem M can also cause some serious side effects that need urgent medical attention. If you experience any of these, you should dial 999 and state that you’ve taken prochlorperazine as well as describing your symptoms to the operator:

  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome
  • Convulsions
  • Signs of infection
  • Blood clots in your veins
  • Decreased sodium concentration in your blood

In some very rare cases, Buccastem M can cause an allergic reaction. If you notice anything that may indicate an allergy to Buccastem M, you should dial 999.

Buccastem M for anxiety

Buccastem M can’t be used to treat instances of anxiety. However, the generic medication, prochlorperazine, is licenced for this purpose. Unfortunately, our doctors can’t prescribe Buccastem M for anxiety, so if you think that prochlorperazine could help you with your symptoms, you should contact your own GP for advice and ask whether they think it might be suitable to relieve some of your feelings of anxiety.

Buccastem in pregnancy

Although many pregnant mothers still suffer with migraines throughout gestation, Buccastem isn’t recommended to be taken during pregnancy.

We understand that pregnancy can be a difficult time, and that nausea associated with migraines may be heightened during this time, but Buccastem M may pose a risk to your unborn baby, and is therefore not recommended during pregnancy or breast feeding.

Prochlorperazine for morning sickness

Prochlorperazine might seem like the ideal treatment for morning sickness during pregnancy, but the drug doesn’t have an official indication for this purpose.

If you’re looking for treatment for morning sickness, you should visit your own GP, as they will be better equipped to evaluate any risks and prescribe something that they deem appropriate for you and your baby.

Some doctors may prescribe prochlorperazine for morning sickness during pregnancy, but this is at their own discretion and should be treated on a case by case basis depending on the risks and benefits involved.

Buccastem dose

Buccastem tablets each contain 3mg of prochlorperazine per tablet, and dosage instructions say to take 1-2 tablets per day for a maximum of 2 days. If you find that you need to take both tablets during one day, you should space them out far enough apart so that you aren’t taking more than you need to.

You should not exceed the stated dose. If you still feel nauseous after 2 days, you should make an appointment to see your own doctor, as they may be able to prescribe something else for you to take.

How to take Buccastem

Buccastem M tablets should not be chewed or swallowed whole. You should place the small tablet high up under your top gum, towards the front of the mouth on either side. This should then be left there to dissolve.

Buccastem M tablets may take up to 2 hours to dissolve, so it’s important not to agitate them with your tongue, as it may cause the tablet to dissolve too fast. Although 2 hours seems like a long time to have medication in your mouth, as long as the tablet is in a comfortable position, you shouldn’t be able to feel it after a few minutes.

You can still drink water whilst waiting for your tablet to dissolve, but you should avoid eating any food or chewing, as this may affect how long it takes for Buccastem M to dissolve.

You should also avoid drinking alcohol whilst taking this medication, as it could worsen your symptoms or increase your risk of experiencing certain side effects.

How long does Buccastem take to work?

The amount of time Buccastem takes to work can depend on a few things, for example, how long the tablet takes to dissolve and how quickly your body responds to the medication.

As Buccastem M tablets can take up to 2 hours to dissolve, it may be a while before you experience relief from your symptoms, but it’s important to persevere with the tablet and not to spit it out, as you won’t receive the full benefits of the medication.

Buccastem over the counter

Buccastem M is a pharmacy medicine, which means that it should be available over the counter in most pharmacies. However, whilst it doesn’t need a prescription from a doctor, you’ll still need to answer questions from a pharmacist to make sure that it’s a suitable medicine for you.

You should tell the pharmacist about any medical conditions you have, as well as any other medicines you might be taking, whether they’re prescribed or not.
