What’s in the Canesten Thrush Duo Pack and how does it work?

The Canesten Thrush Duo pack contains an oral capsule that is taken as a single dose, this is to directly treat the infection. The pack also contains a cream that is applied externally to the vagina or penis to reduce any soreness or itching.

Canesten Thrush Duo contains two active ingredients, fluconazole which is present in the capsule, and clotrimazole which is present in the cream. These ingredients are known as antifungal medicines, they fight infection caused by fungi and yeast such as thrush. These medicines work by interfering with the cell membranes of the fungi, it stops the fungi from producing a substance known as ergosterol which is an essential component of the cell membrane that prevents the cell’s contents from leaking out. Without ergosterol, the fungi cannot survive as holes appear in the cell membrane which forces its contents to leak out. Both of these antifungal medicines kill the fungi which eventually clears the thrush infection.

Is this treatment right for me?

This treatment can only be used for vaginal or penile thrush infections. The symptoms of thrush can be very similar to other infections so it’s important that you get a diagnosis from your GP before buying this treatment to ensure that it will work for you. If you have been diagnosed with thrush, or have recurrent thrush, your sexual partner may also be treated at the same time with the external cream to prevent the thrush infection from returning.

How to use Canesten Thrush Duo Oral Capsule and External Cream

In the pack you will be given one oral capsule that contains fluconazole, this should be taken whole with water, and with or without food. Do not take more than one capsule. The cream which contains clotrimazole should be applied externally around the entrance of the vagina or at the end of the penis. Apply the cream thinly and evenly 2-3 times a day until your symptoms are gone. You should feel better after around two days of treatment, however, see your doctor if your symptoms haven’t improved after 7 days of treatment.

Who should not use this medicine?

There are some circumstances where this treatment may not be suitable, for instance, if you have a certain medical condition or are taking medicines which may interact with Canesten Thrush Duo. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to fluconazole, clotrimazole, or any of the other ingredients in this medicine, this also applies if you’ve ever had a reaction to any other fungal infection treatments.

Do not use this treatment for any other infection, if you’re a woman and have the following symptoms you should speak to your doctor as soon as possible. These symptoms include:

• Irregular vaginal bleeding
• Abnormal vaginal bleeding or blood-stained discharge
• Ulcers, blisters, or sores on the vagina or vulva
• Abdominal pain
• Pain or difficulty in passing urine
• Fever or chills
• Feeling sick or vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• A foul-smelling discharge from the vagina

If you’re male you should speak to your doctor before using this treatment if your sexual partner does not have thrush, or you have symptoms such as ulcers, sores, blisters on your penis, abnormal discharge from the penis, your penis has started to smell, or pain or difficulty in passing urine.

Always inform your doctor or pharmacist of any medical conditions you have or any medication you may be taking before starting this treatment.

Can I use Canesten Thrush Duo if i’m pregnant?

It’s common to get thrush while pregnant, however, you should speak to your doctor before using any thrush treatments. Canesten Thrush Duo should not be used during pregnany, breastfeeding, or if you’re trying for a baby.

What are the side effects of Canesten Thrush Duo?

The most common symptoms associated with the oral capsule include headache, stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, feeling sick, vomiting, a rash, and increases in blood tests of liver function. The side effects may occur in up to 1 in 10 people. After applying the cream there may be some itching, discomfort, swelling, redness, blistering, and irritation of the skin, if any side effects persist or become severe, see your doctor as soon as possible.

Serious side effects may include blistering and peeling of the skin, mouth, eyes, or genitals, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools which may be a sign of liver problems, seizures, and changes in heart rhythm or rate. If you experience these symptoms you seek urgent medical help.

If you expereince a serious allergic reaction stop using the product immediately and seek emergency medical help. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include a rash, swelling of your lips, face, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing, weakness, feeling dizzy or faint, and nausea.
