Cerelle

Cerelle is a contraceptive pill which contains desogestrel (a synthetic progesterone). By manipulating the amount of progesterone in the body, this medication can influence preparations the body normally goes through to prepare for pregnancy. Cerelle ultimately prevents ovulation and stops sperm from reaching the womb. This product is classified as a mini-pill or progesterone-only pill (or POP for short).

When you are prescribed cerelle, the tablets should be taken on a daily basis to provide full contraceptive protection. Since it does not contain oestrogen, this medication may prove a more efficient method of preventing pregnancy for women who are more sensitive to the side effects which are sometimes caused by combined oral contraceptives.

  • You should take ONE tablet at the same time each day
  • If you miss a dose or take your tablet more than 12 hours later than you should, read the patient information leaflet or speak to a GP or pharmacist for advice, as you may not be protected against pregnancy.
  • If you experience vomiting or severe diarrhoea, this medication may not work effectively. Because of this, it's recommended that you use condoms or other barrier methods for 7 days after you've experienced illnesses like these.

What is Cerelle?

Cerelle, also sold as Cerazette, is a progesterone-only contraceptive pill for women which contains 75 micrograms of the synthetic sex hormone desogestrel. It works by prevent pregnancy through increasing the thickness of mucus at the neck of the cervix to make it more difficult for sperm to pass through, and by reducing the thickness of the womb lining to prevent fertilised eggs from implanting, as well as preventing ovulation by tricking the body into thinking ovulation has already occurred.

Progesterone-only contraception tablets such as cerelle are commonly known as ‘the mini-pill’ or simply ‘the pill’ for short.

How to take a Cerelle pill?

Cerelle should be taken orally once per day with water, and with or without food. This medication should be taken continuously, so there is no week-long break as with some other types of contraceptive pills. Cerelle should be taken at the same time each day – if you forget to take the pill and are more than 12 hours late, you should use an alternative method of contraception as well as the pill, as its efficiency at preventing pregnancy may be reduced. Continue taking your remaining pills at the usual time.

Are precautions needed with Cerelle?

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies you are aware of, as well as any current or previous health conditions, and prescription or non-prescription medications and herbal remedies you are taking. This medication may contain inactive ingredients which could cause health concerns.

If you’ve ever experience any of the following, you should not take Cerelle:

  • Unexplained or unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Breast cancer or a history of breast cancer or other cancers that grow under the influence of certain hormones
  • Hereditary blood disorders, such as acute porphyria
  • Thrombosis
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)
  • Kidney or liver conditions
  • Known or suspected sex-steroid sensitive malignancies

Cerelle contains lactose, so patients with any form of lactose intolerance should seek medical advice before taking this medication.

This drug is not designed to be taken while pregnant, although there is no evidence to suggest doing so will harm the unborn infant. If you think you may be pregnant, stop taking the pill and discuss the potential risks with your doctor.

Cerelle does not prevent against sexually-transmitted diseases, so a suitable method of protection should be used alongside the pill to prevent the spread of infections.

If you are currently taking any other medicines, then these should be mentioned to your doctor or local pharmacist before you start using cerelle. This is because the effects of certain medicines can interact with the effects of cerelle. It’s particularly important to highlight if you’re using any of the following:

  • Any medicines used for treating epilepsy (such as primidone, carbamazepine or phenytoin)
  • Any medicines used for treating tuberculosis (such as rifampicin or rifabutin)
  • Any medicines used for treating HIV infections (such as ritonavir or nerivapine)
  • Any medicines used for treating hepatitis C infection (such as boceprevir or telaprevir)
  • Other medicines which treat infectious diseases (such as griseofulvin)
  • Bosentan
  • St. John’s Wort
  • Any medicines used for treating certain bacterial infections (such as clarithromycin or erythromycin)
  • Any medicines which treat fungal infections (such as ketoconazole or fluconazole)
  • Any medicines which treat high blood pressure, angina or certain heart rhythm disorders (such as diltiazem)

Side effects of Cerelle?

Like with other medicines, cerelle can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them. The common potential side effects of using cerelle include:

  • Irregular bleeding or no bleeding at all
  • Changes in mood (including depression)
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Breast tenderness

Other side effects are possible but also much less likely to occur. The chances are you won’t notice any side effects at all, and even if you do, they will be relatively mild and short-lived. If you do experience any side effects which are prolonged or severe (such as symptoms of an allergic reaction), then contact a doctor as soon as possible.

How do I buy Cerelle online?
