What is Clenil Modulite?

Clenil Modulite is a medicine that treats the condition, asthma. Taken via an inhaler, the treatment is used to maintain healthy breathing and prevent difficulties with the lungs from occurring. It can be used to prevent asthma symptoms which are considered mild, moderate or severe. When prescribed this treatment, Clenil Modulite is inhaled on a daily basis.

How does Clenil Modulite work?

This medication contains beclometasone dipropionate, which belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids (or simply known as steroids). When it is inhaled, Clenil Modulite has an anti-inflammatory effect, reducing swelling and irritation in the walls of the small air passages in the lungs.

The treatment prevents the release of chemicals that are released as part of immune and allergic responses and therefore stops inflammation which would disrupt airways and create asthma attacks. The medication is a ‘preventer’ inhaler which means it prevents asthma symptoms from developing, whereas a fast-acting reliever (rescue) inhaler would be used in response to an asthma attack.

How do I take Clenil Modulite?

Your doctor and information leaflet will provide detailed guidance on how to use and maintain the inhaler correctly. Your doctor will also provide guidance on what strength of treatment is best for you. This medicine is available in a few different strengths.

When prescribed to adults, the usual starting dose is 200 micrograms twice a day. So that means if you are using the 50 micrograms (weakest) version of the inhaler, you will take 4 puffs on two occasions each day. When prescribed to children, the typical starting dose is 100 micrograms twice a day. Only inhalers with a strength of 50 micrograms or 100 micrograms are suitable to be used by children.

The daily dosage may later be increased by your doctor, but whether it actually will be and by how much depends on how you respond to initial treatment.

When will I know my inhaler needs replacing?

The inhaler that contains this medication features an indicator on its back that shows the number of puffs available to use before there will be none left. The number of puffs remaining is displayed in intervals of 20.

When the indicator shows there are just 20 doses left, this is a good time to request/order a new inhaler from your doctor/pharmacy. This is to ensure you have a replacement in good time. You can keep using the current inhaler until it reaches 0 doses and then discard it in an appropriate manner once it’s emptied.

What are the side effects of Clenil Modulite?

Side effects are possible when taking Clenil Modulite, although not all patients experience any. One of the most common side effects that can occur is thrush in the mouth and throat. This is more likely if the daily dose you take is greater than 400 micrograms. You can reduce the chances of experiencing thrush if you brush your teeth or thoroughly rinse your mouth with water immediately after each dose.

Another common side effect is having a hoarse voice or a sore throat or tongue after using the inhaler. If you experience this, you could prevent it from happening again by using a volumatic spacer device with your inhaler or rinse your mouth with water immediately after taking a dose.

Other side effects are possible but also much less common. Some of the rare side effects can be serious, so contact your doctor if you experience any that feel particularly troubling or prolonged. If you experience an immediate increase in wheezing, shortness of breath and coughing after using this inhaler, stop using Clenil Modulite and use a fast-acting reliever inhaler straight away.

Can I use Clenil Modulite?

Before you start using Clenil Modulite, you may need to check that you don’t have any health circumstances that’ll mean extra precautions will be required during treatment. Speak to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist before starting the medication if any of the following applies to you:

  • You are being, or have ever been, treated for tuberculosis
  • You are transferring from steroid tablets to using Clenil Modulite
  • You are someone who drinks alcohol. Alcohol should be avoided while using this particular medication
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding or think you may be pregnant

You should also inform your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you are currently taking before you start Clenil Modulite, so you can get advice on any potential clashes between the treatments.

What if I use too much of this medication?

If you take a larger dose of Clenil Modulite than you were meant to, then contact your doctor about this as soon as possible. Your doctor may want to check the levels of cortisol (a steroid hormone the body naturally produces) in your blood.

What if I forget to use this medication?

If you forget to take a dose of Clenil Modulite then there is no need to panic. Simply skip the forgotten dose and take the next one at the usual time. Avoid taking more puffs of this medication than instructed in an attempt to make up for a missed dose.
