Clotrimazole Cream

Clotrimazole is a medicinal cream used to treat a variety of fungal infections. It can be applied externally on skin in various areas such as the feet (if dealing with athlete’s foot). When used, Clotrimazole is able to prevent fungi from spreading across the body and kills off existing cells that make up the infection, reducing irritation and other symptoms of the infection.

What is Clotrimazole?

Clotrimazole is an antifungal cream that can be used to treat infections such as athlete’s foot, ringworm and thrush. It can also be used on fungal nappy rashes, fungal sweat rashes and to relieve irritation of the vulva or the end of the penis. This medication is the generic version of a treatment called Canesten.

How does Clotrimazole work?

Clotrimazole is part of a group of medicines called imidazoles, which are designed to destroy fungus or yeast which cause an infection. This cream, when applied to fungal skin infections or external thrush, is able to eliminate fungus by preventing it from producing a substance called ergosterol, which it requires to survive.

With the ability to produce ergosterol taken away, the existing cells of the fungus become weaker and less capable of maintaining their structure. The fungus then starts to die out and the symptoms of the infection start to diminish.

How do I take Clotrimazole?

This cream should be used as described in the product’s information leaflet or as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. Before using this treatment, pierce the tube seal by inverting the cap over the end of the tube and press. The cream should be applied thinly and evenly on to the affected areas and rubbed in gently, two or three times daily. A strip of cream that’s half a centimetre long is enough to treat an affected area that’s about the size of the hand.

If you’re treating a fungal infection on the feet, they should be washed and dried thoroughly (particularly between the toes) before using this cream. How long you’ll use Clotrimazole for depends on the type of infection being treated. The cream is used for at least two weeks for candida (thrush) infections or at least one month for other types of infection.

What are the side effects of Clotrimazole?

There is a possibility that Clotrimazole could cause side effects, but they are not common so chances are you won’t notice any. If you do experience any side effects, it is worth talking to your doctor or pharmacist about these, since they could be an indication that you’re allergic to this cream.

If you or your baby are being treated with this cream and an allergic reaction occurs, contact your doctor or hospital emergency department right away. Signs of an allergic reaction include the following:

  • A rash
  • Swallowing or breathing problems
  • Swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue
  • Dizziness or feeling faint
  • Nausea

Can I use Clotrimazole?

Before you begin using Clotrimazole, you should let your doctor or pharmacist know if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are currently taking (or have recently used) other medicines. Clotrimazole is not known to interact with other medicines but your doctor will nevertheless want to be aware of what else you may be currently taking
  • You have previously used a cream containing Clotrimazole (or a similar medicine) and experienced an unpleasant or allergic skin reaction
  • You are pregnant, breast-feeding or think you may be pregnant

How do I store Clotrimazole?

This medication should be stored in a cool dry place which is out of the sight and reach of children. Clotrimazole does not need to be stored in a fridge or freezer. Avoid using this treatment after the expiry date which is stated on the carton after the text ‘EXP’.

How can I make this cream more effective?

There are several self-help tips you can keep in mind to help make this treatment more likely to work. While an area of skin affected by a fungal infection will itch, try not to scratch it. If you do, the surface of the skin will be damaged and the infection could spread further.

Keep the affected skin areas clean and pay close attention to drying them, particularly when it’s just before time to apply Clotrimazole to the area. However, take care drying the skin so you avoid doing things such as excessively rubbing the area while drying.

If you are using this medication for dealing with athlete’s foot, then remember to dry the skin between your toes thoroughly. Also change your footwear daily if possible and thoroughly wash your socks, stockings and tights with hot water, in order to remove any shed skin or fungal spores.

Also remember to wash your hands after treating the infection to avoid it spreading. Items like towels and bath mats should not be shared with other people, since this could end up spreading the infection to them.
