Contour Next Link Blood Glucose Meter

The Contour Next Link blood glucose monitoring system is an over-the-counter device that can be utilised by people with diabetes in their home or elsewhere to measure their current blood sugar level. The device can be wirelessly linked with certain compatible insulin pumps in order to send test results to it. The Contour Next Link meter utilises test strips which analyse a drop of your blood (which you’ll get from your finger or palm after using a lancing device). The test strip used for a blood glucose test is inserted into the meter and then the strip can pull in a blood drop for analysis and a quick result.

What is a Contour Next Link Blood Glucose Meter?

The Contour Next Link wireless blood glucose meter is a monitoring system which can be used by diabetes patients to monitor their current blood sugar level. It’s designed to be easy and convenient to use at home. Produced by Bayer, this is a single-patient use only item and should not be shared between two or more people.

How does the meter work?

The system consists of a wireless blood glucose meter alongside compatible test strips and control solutions. The control solutions are aqueous glucose solutions intended for use in self-testing by people with diabetes as a quality control check. The Contour Next Link meter requires a drop of blood (usually taken from the patient’s finger or alternatively the palm of the hand) and a lancet is used to get the required drop of blood. This drop is then put on to a test strip and the meter is used to get a reading on blood glucose levels from the used test strip.

Features of the meter

A significant feature of the Contour Next Link wireless blood glucose meter is its ability to communicate results directly to compatible Medtronic insulin pumps and CGMs (continuous glucose monitoring).

Only order and use this meter if you are using the related insulin pumps. Medtronic devices which the Contour Next Link is compatible with includes the following:

  • MiniMed Paradigm Veo insulin pump
  • MiniMed Paradigm REAL-Time insulin pump and CGM
  • Guardian REAL-Time CGM system

There are other features the meter incorporates to make testing and recording your blood sugar levels easier. These include USB connectivity on the meter itself, allowing patients to plug it straight into a USB port on your laptop or computer. Doing this lets you not only charge the meter, but also upload and analyse your blood glucose results.

Other features of this blood glucose meter include:

  • Second-chance sampling, which allows extra blood to be added during a test
  • The ability to add meal markers and other notes such as activity, stress and sickness
  • The ability to add how much time has passed since the last meal you ate
  • The ability to do calculations for trends and averages regarding fasting, pre-meal and post-meal covering a 7, 14, 30 or 90-day period
  • The ability to set testing reminders
  • Lighted test strip port which allows for testing to take place in the dark

Using the Contour link meter

Your test meter should come with detailed instructions on each step required regarding how to do a test with it correctly. Refer to this user manual if you are using the Contour link meter for the first time or need a reminder on any of the steps. The main steps involved in completing a blood glucose test with this kit are preparing the meter and test strip to be used, applying blood to the test strip at the right time and then receiving and analysing the result displayed.

You need to have compatible Contour Next test strips and insert one into the meter. This action will turn the meter on. When the ‘apply blood’ screen appears on the meter, touch the test strip to the drop of blood on your finger/palm. Hold it until the meter beeps. When it does beep, you should wait 5 seconds. At the end of the countdown, the test result should be displayed on the meter. To turn the meter off, press and hold the top menu button. The meter turns itself off automatically after 3 minutes of inactivity.

To link your Contour meter to a compatible pump, you need to access ‘pump options’ on your meter device. You’ll then be asked to confirm that you want to connect to a compatible pump. After doing this, you will need to use the display screen on your pump to confirm that you want it to connect to your link meter. While connecting the two devices together, a number known as the Meter ID will be shown on your meter device and this will need to be entered into your pump device to make the connection possible.
