What is Cyclizine?

Cyclizine is an antihistamine used to treat travel sickness,it is also used to relieve nausea, vomiting, attacks of dizziness or spinning sensations (vertigo).

How does Cyclizine work?

Your brain receives signals from nerves that are situated inside your ear. Together with messages from your eyes and muscles, these nerves help your body maintain a sense of balance. If these nerves send too many, too few or the wrong messages to your brain, it conflicts with messages sent from your other ear, eyes, or your body. This confuses your brain which in-turn can cause dizziness and a spinning sensation (vertigo), and makes you feel sick.

The vestibular apparatus is the part of our body that provides feedback to our brains about our bodies position. When we travel via boats or cars, this can disturb the vestibular apparatus due to the movement of our heads. This then sends signals to the vomiting centre of our brains which causes sensations such as nausea, dizziness or spinning sensations (vertigo) resulting in the reflex to vomit.

Cyclizine works to prevent these sensations by blocking histamine and muscarinic receptors in the vomiting centre in the brain. This prevents the vomiting centre from receiving nerve messages from the vestibular apparatus which helps reduce or stop the effects of nausea from dizziness or vertigo.

Before taking Cyclizine

Before taking Cyclizine it is important that your doctor or pharmacist knows:

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding
  • if you have any problems with the way your liver works, or if you have heart failure
  • If you have increased pressure in your eye, a condition called glaucoma
  • If you have epilepsy
  • If you have prostate problems, or have been experiencing difficulty passing urine
  • If you have a blockage in your small intestines
  • If you have a rare inherited blood disorder called porphyria
  • If you are taking any other medicines. This includes any medicines which are available to buy without prescription, as well as herbal and complimentary medicines
  • If you have ever had an allergic reaction to medicine

How to take Cyclizine

  • If you are taking cyclizine for travel sickness, take one tablet 1-2 hours before travelling. A further dose can be taken if needed every eight hours
  • Children aged 6 to 12 years should take a half tablet two hours before travel. Children can then be given half a tablet every eight hours during the journey if needed
