What is Cycloset?

Cycloset tablets are used to lower blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is usually taken as an adjunct to diet and exercise and may be taken alongside other medicines also designed to help control your blood sugar levels.

By preventing blood sugar levels from getting too high, Cycloset helps to prevent issues such as kidney damage, nerve problems, loss of limbs, sexual function problems and blindness. It can also lessen your risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke.

How does Cycloset work?

Cycloset contains what is called bromocriptine mesylate. It helps with the body’s process of producing insulin to break down glucose in the blood so they can enter cells and fuel the body. It’s this process not happening properly which is the main issue caused by Type 2 diabetes, and it ends up leading to high blood sugar levels.

How do I take Cycloset?

Cycloset tablets should be taken once a day with food within two hours after waking in the morning. Typically, the initial dose is one tablet (0.8mg) daily increased weekly by one tablet until maximal tolerated daily dose of 1.6 to 4.8mg is achieved. A lower dose during the early days of taking this medicine may be preferred in order to reduce your risk of side effects.

While taking Cycloset, do not switch to a different brand of bromocriptine unless you’re instructed to do so by your doctor. Other brands of this medication may not have the same effect on blood sugar control.

What are the side effects of Cycloset?

Dizziness is a common side effect of Cycloset, especially after your first dose or when your dosage has very recently increased. It’s therefore recommended that you sit or lie down immediately after taking your first dose or one that is stronger than the previous dose you took. This should decrease the risk of injury from falling. You should rest any other time you feel dizzy while taking this medicine.

The other most commonly reported side effects of taking this medication include fatigue, nausea, vomiting and headaches. These are most likely to occur within the first couple of weeks of taking Cycloset. Ultimately though, many people who take this medication do not experience any serious side effects.

There is some possibility that this medicine can cause low blood sugar if you do not consume enough calories or do unusually heavy exercise. It may be a good idea to carry with you a means of treating low blood sugar such as glucose tablets or a suitable gel treatment.

You should contact your doctor right away if you experience any serious side effects which can include the following:

  • Vision problems
  • Mood changes (including depression, confusion and hallucinations)
  • A serious allergic reaction which causes a rash, itching or swelling around the face and potential breathing troubles
  • Can I use Cycloset?

Cyloset is meant to be taken by exclusively adults which have type 2 diabetes. It is not a suitable treatment for dealing with type 1 diabetes. You should avoid taking this medication if you have type 1 diabetes or if you have fainting migraine headaches or take medicine for migraines called ergots. Anyone currently breastfeeding should also avoid Cycloset.

There are certain other health conditions or medicine which you should make your doctor aware of before starting this treatment. Your doctor will especially want to be aware if you have any of the following:

  • You have passed out or fainted in the past
  • You have migraine headaches
  • You have or have had low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • You have or have had a mental health condition (especially a psychotic disorder)
  • You’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • In regards other medicines and Cycloset, your doctor will want to know if you are taking or have recently taken any of the following types:

  • Treatments for mental health conditions, especially anti-psychotic medicines
  • Treatments for migraines or other types of headaches
  • Treatments for high blood pressure
  • Treatments for Parkinson’s disease
  • Treatments for restless leg syndrome
  • Treatments for endocrine related disorders (such as acromegaly)
  • Any other medication for Type 2 diabetes
  • You should also inform your doctor if you are taking any products that can cause drowsiness. This can include alcohol, marijuana and antihistamines, as well as drugs for sleep or anxiety (like zolpidem and diazepam), muscle relaxants and narcotic pain relievers.

What if I take too much Cycloset?

If you take more of this medication than you are supposed to, contact your doctor or go to your nearest hospital emergency department straight away.

What if I forget to take Cycloset?

If you forget to take a dose of this medication, but you remember within two hours of rising, then take your dose then. If you have been up for more than two hours, then skip the forgotten dose and take the next one during the next morning. Don’t take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
