What is Daktacort?

Daktacort is a medicinal cream used to treat inflamed conditions of the skin which may be caused by a fungal or bacterial infection. It is applied directly to areas affected by a patient’s condition and works to reduce inflammation and itching. This treatment may be used on conditions such as athlete’s foot or eczema and dermatitis caused by certain fungi or bacteria.

How does Daktacort work?

Daktacort contains miconazole nitrate and hydrocortisone. The latter reduces inflammation, swelling redness, and itching on areas of the skin affected by an infection. The miconazole helps to eliminate infection by creating holes in the membranes of fungal cells on the skin. This causes any fungi, yeasts or harmful bacteria to get weaker and weaker until they completely die out.

How do I use Daktacort?

Before you start using this cream, you’ll have to unseal the tube which you can achieve by using the cap to pierce the tube. Also, make sure you wash the infected area and dry it well. Since many skin conditions are infectious, you should keep a towel and flannel for your own use and avoid sharing them so they don’t infect anyone else.

Once ready, apply a small amount of the medicinal cream to the affected area and rub it in gently until the cream has disappeared. The cream should be applied to the affected area on 2 or 3 occasions each day unless instructed otherwise by your doctor. The cream is not meant to be used for a long time, so contact your doctor if your skin problem does not get better after 7 days.

Assuming the infection is not on your hands, completely wash them carefully after applying the cream to avoid spreading the infections to other parts of the body or to other people. Clothing which comes into contact with the infected areas should also be washed and changed frequently.

How do I store Daktacort?

The cream should be stored within its original packaging in a refrigerator. Don’t use this medication beyond its expiry date, which will be stated on the product’s label. The expiry date refers to the last day of the month shown.

What are the side effects of Daktacort?

There are various side effects that patients could experience while using Daktacort cream, but they are uncommon so you may not notice any at all. Some of the side effects that can sometimes occur while using this treatment include the following:

  • Irritated and itchy skin
  • Burning sensation
  • Lighter patches of skin
  • Blurred vision

It is also possible that on rare occasions that an allergic reaction may occur. If this does happen, you should stop using this medicine and seek medical help straight away. Signs that the cream is giving you an allergic reaction include the following:

  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Severe irritation or reddening of the skin where the cream has been used, possibly due to hives

Can I use Daktacort?

Before you start using Daktacort, you should be sure that you don’t have any medical conditions or other circumstances related to your health that could prohibit you from this treatment. Avoid using this medication if any of the above applies to you:

  • You have cold sores
  • You have herpes
  • You have chickenpox
  • You have shingles
  • You have another skin problem unrelated to the type of infection which Daktacort usually treats (speak to your doctor about your issue if you’re unsure)

You should speak to your doctor or pharmacist about whether Daktacort is suitable if any of these circumstances apply to you.

  • You have inflamed skin on your face. This cream is not meant to be used on your face, so only do so if your doctor specifically gives instructions to do so
  • You are planning to use a barrier method of contraception during treatment, such as condoms or diaphragms. Daktacort cream can damage the latex on these and prevent them from working properly. Consult your doctor about alternative types of contraception you could use.
  • You experience blurred vision or other visual disturbances

If this cream is to be used on a young child, they should not be treated with it for long periods of time (such as every day for several weeks). It should only be used sparingly and not applied on large areas of a child’s body or under a baby’s nappy unless instructed by your doctor. Elderly patients should also only use this medicine sparingly because Daktacort can cause thinning of the skin when used for a lengthy period of time without a break.

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist also if you are currently using any other medication. It’s particularly important to mention if you are currently taking any medicines that thin your blood (anticoagulants), like warfarin. Also, speak to one of them as a precaution if you are either pregnant or breast-feeding.

What if I forget to use Daktacort?

If you miss a dose of Daktacort cream, then simply skip it and apply the next due dose at the normal planned time. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
