Dalacin T

Dalacin T is a brand of topical antibiotic that contains clindamycin. It’s most often used to treat outbreaks of acne caused by bacteria within the sebaceous glands.

Dalacin T is available as a lotion or a solution, and is easy to apply at home. You should use the clindamycin solution or lotion twice a day for several weeks to allow your skin to recover, and after around 2 months of use, you should be able to see an improvement in your symptoms.

Dalacin T might not be suitable for everyone, as it contains an antibiotic that can cause issues if you have some medical conditions, including:

  • Allergy to clindamycin
  • Allergy to lincomycin
  • History of inflammatory bowel disease or antibiotic-associated colitis

Dalacin T is only available on prescription, but if you order from Doctor4U and compelte our online consultation form for acne, one of our own GMC-registered doctors will decide whether or not it’s a suitable medication for you to use. If they approve your order, they will generate a prescription, which will then be dispensed and shipped from our UK-based partner pharmacy.

Dalacin T

Dalacin T is a brand of medication that treats acne. Acne is often caused by propionibacterium acnes – a type of bacteria that lives on the skin. It feeds on sebum that’s produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin, and whilst it can usually live perfectly harmlessly, it can cause problems from time to time.

Sometimes, the bacteria that causes acne can get into the sebaceous glands and produce waste products, which then cause irritation and inflammation, appearing as what we know as acne.

As Dalacin T contains the antibiotic clindamycin, it’s an ideal treatment for acne as it can target the bacteria directly at the source to reduce your spots and symptoms, allowing the skin to repair any inflammation over time.

Dalacin T can be used on the face, back and chest, but it’s important that you avoid it coming into contact with your eyes, or any other mucous membranes. Both the lotion and the solution are for external use only, and may cause skin irritation in some people due to some of the ingredients used.

Dalacin T lotion

Dalacin T is available as a lotion and as a solution. The lotion comes with a dispensing cap. It appears as an off-white emulsion and is usually fairly runny in consistency. The lotion can be applied to the problem areas either with your fingers, or with a cotton pad – whichever you prefer.

It’s always important to wash your hands before and after you apply Dalacin T. This is to avoid contaminating your acne with any excess bacteria or germs, and also to make sure that you don’t get any of the clindamycin lotion on areas of skin that don’t need treatment.

Dalacin T lotion is usually applied twice a day, often in the morning and at night, so it might help you to remember to apply the lotion if you keep it in an area where you get ready at these times of day – usually a bathroom or bedroom.

Dalacin T topical solution

Dalacin T solution contains the same active ingredient as the lotion, but comes as a slightly different form. The solution comes with an automatic pad dispenser, and you can place this directly onto the affected area to apply the medication.

Dosage instructions for Dalacin T topical solution are the same as they are with the lotion – apply it twice a day in a thin layer, making sure to cover all of the area that’s affected by acne.

It’s important to know that Dalacin T lotion is flammable, and should be kept away from open flames at all times. You should also avoid smoking, especially if you apply the solution to your face, as there is a change that a cigarette could ignite the medication and put you at risk of burns.

Clindamycin for acne

Clindamycin is an ideal treatment for most forms of acne. As it is an antibiotic, it targets bacteria that causes an infection, allowing your skin to recover and preventing it from getting worse during this time.

Clindamycin works for acne by targeting the propionibacterium acnes that causes the spots, and interfering with its growth, blocking the production of some proteins that the bacteria needs to survive. Without these proteins, the bacteria can’t reproduce, and the ones that are currently within your sebaceous glands die naturally, eventually getting rid of the infection and inflammation.

Topical use of clindamycin for acne means that it can go directly to the source, rather than having to go via an oral route, which can cause other problems and more side effects than a topical form.

Dalacin topical solution side effects

Although topical forms of clindamycin usually result in fewer adverse effects than oral antibiotics, Dalacin can still cause some side effects in some people. Most patients that use Dalacin T for acne find that these side effects are manageable, but if you find that they cause you a lot of discomfort or pain, you should stop using it and consult your own GP for advice, as you may need a different medication or something with different ingredients.

The side effects of Dalacin T listed in the patient information leaflet include:

  • Skin irritation, including burning, itching and peeling
  • Hives
  • Skin dryness
  • Oily skin
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Severe acne
  • Eye stinging
  • Stomach pain
  • Inflammation of the skin due to contact with an irritant

Because of the ingredients used in Dalacin T, it’s incredibly important to make sure that the lotion or solution doesn’t come into contact with your eyes, as it can cause burning and irritation, and potentially vision problems.

You may be at a greater risk of experiencing side effects with Dalacin T solution or lotion if you also take any medications that it has been known to interact with. These medications include:

  • Any topical treatments that contain benzoyl peroxide (eg: acnecide)
  • Neuromuscular blocking agents
  • Anticoagulants such as warfarin

If you do take any of these medications, you should avoid using Dalacin T until you’ve spoken to your own doctor about how to proceed with your treatment.

If you use acnecide gel, or any other topical treatment that contains benzoyl peroxide, you should stop using it until you’ve completed your course of Dalacin T, as these two treatments used together can cause dangerous interactions and severe skin irritation.

How long does Dalacin T take to work

Unfortunately, Dalacin T isn’t a quick fix for acne, and it can often take several weeks before you notice any improvement in your symptoms. Many people that use Dalacin T for acne find that it takes 2 months of regular use until they notice a difference. Because of this, it’s important to not give up on your treatment before this amount of time, even if you don’t think it’s working.

If you aren’t sure how long you should use Dalacin T for, you should speak to your doctor who should be able to give you advice on how long they think you may need to stay on the treatment to get rid of your spots and acne symptoms.

You can still wear moisturiser or cosmetics when using Dalacin T, but you should first make sure that the solution or lotion is completely dry before applying these, as otherwise it could affect your treatment and prolong your outbreak and symptoms.
