Dermamist Spray

Dermamist is a treatment for conditions which cause dry and itchy skin, particularly eczema. The medicine comes in an aerosol spray and is applied to areas of dry skin to give them an oily coating so that they can retain water and stay moisturised. People can struggle with dry, scaly and irritated skin because of a condition they are born with or as a result of pruritus, which is a skin condition that commonly affects the elderly. A medicinal spray like dermamist is a simple and effective way of reducing symptoms on dried skin, as long as you follow instructions for use carefully.

What is Dermamist spray?

Dermamist is a medicinal spray used to treat dry skin conditions such as eczema and ichthyosis. Dry skin is caused by a lack of water in the outer layer of the skin cells (known as the stratum corneum). When the top layer of the skin becomes dry, it ends up becoming cracked and scaly and sometimes itchy too.

If this problem is severe, then you can treat it by using a medication like dermamist, which is known as an emollient. An emollient is designed to help the skin retain moisture. This is an effective way of removing the annoying symptoms caused by dry and itchy skin.

How does Dermamist work?

Dermamist contains white soft paraffin which is kept in a pressurised aerosol spray. Other ingredients in this spray include liquid paraffin and fractionated coconut oil. The aerosol propellant used in dermamist is a mixture of butane, isobutene and propane.

When this spray is used, the paraffin forms an oily layer on the skin which helps prevent water from evaporating from the skin surface, particularly when the skin is already moist after having a bath or shower. By having more water in the cells of the outer layer of the skin, they swell against each other and reduce any cracks which exist in the skin surface. The oils put on the skin may also penetrate into the stratum corneum and act like the natural lipids found in healthy skin (which prevent water evaporating from deeper layers of skin).

Precautions before and when using Dermamist

If you are prescribed dermamist to treat a skin condition, then it’s important to know the most appropriate ways to use this spray to stay safe and to get the most out of the treatment. If there’s anything regarding using dermamist you are unsure about, then you can check your patient information leaflet or you could always contact your doctor.

Dermamist should always be used where there is some fresh air, such as an open door or window. You should not breathe in this spray. Also, you should stop using this spray if you notice a change in the colour or feel of the contents.

If you have an area of skin which is broken in some way, then dermamist should not be used here. For example, if you have cuts and lesions from which blood, fluid or pus is oozing, then dermamist is not meant to be applied on these cuts or lesions.

Dermamist should only be sprayed on to areas of skin which require treatment and are not broken. If you accidentally get this spray in your eyes, nose or mouth, then rinse well with warm water. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you still feel any discomfort after rinsing affected areas.

How to use Dermamist

To get the maximum benefit from it, dermamist should be applied after washing. Bather or shower for 10 minutes or less and then pat the skin dry. Once dried, dermamist should be applied straight afterwards.

Hold the spray about 20 centimetres (8 inches) from the skin while using it and move the can rapidly while spraying to give a very light coverage of the body. Applying more of this spray then you need can make the skin feel oily.

Does Dermamist cause side effects?

As is the case with other medicines, there is some possibility that dermamist could cause side effects, but not everyone gets them. In some cases, dermamist may cause irritation, itchiness or a rash but such side effects are usually mild and they are not common or typically long-lasting.

If you do get side effects and notice them getting worse, or you get any side effects not mentioned here or in the patient information leaflet, then inform your doctor or local pharmacist as soon as possible.

How should I store Dermamist?

Dermamist is kept in a pressurised container and the contents are extremely flammable. Therefore, this medicine should be protected from sunlight and you should avoid puncturing or burning the container or exposing it to temperatures over 50 degrees centigrade (even if the container is empty).

Avoid spraying dermamist on a naked flame or anything which is very hot. Do not keep this medicine stored somewhere that is above 25 degrees centigrade.
