What is Dermol 500 lotion?

Dermol 500 lotion is an antimicrobial emollient which means it can treat bacteria on the skin that can aggravate skin conditions such as eczema. It also helps prevent infection caused by scratching the itchy skin, all while locking in moisture to soften the skin and prevent drying. Dermol 500 is predominantly used for dry and itchy skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.

How does Dermol 500 work?

Dermol 500 Lotion contains key active ingredients that help to alleviate itching and prevent drying of the skin. The emollients in this lotion are liquid paraffin and isopropyl myristate, emollients work by forming a protective barrier over the skin to lock in moisture and help replace lost water. This is combined with the antimicrobial ingredients known as benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine dihydrochloride which help to kill bacteria that could infect or irritate dry skin.

Who is this lotion suitable for?

Dermol 500 Lotion can be used by all the family as it’s suitable for all age groups. If you have dry, itchy, or irritated skin, Dermol 500 Lotion can be used as your daily moisturiser or as an alternative to the drying soaps that are often used to shower or bathe in. Use this lotion for a hydrating wash or apply after you’ve showered or bathed and leave on to lock in moisture.

Who should not use Dermol 500 Lotion?

If you’re allergic or hypersensitive to any of the Dermol 500 ingredients including benzalkonium chloride, chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, liquid paraffin, and isopropyl, you must not use this lotion as allergic reactions can be severe and life-threatening. If you’ve had any problems with the ingredients in the past, avoid using this lotion. If this is a new treatment for you and you have sensitive skin it’s always best to do a patch test first to ensure you won’t react when it is applied to a widespread area. Apply the lotion to a small area and if no reactions occur, you may use it more liberally.

Precautions to take when using Dermol 500 Lotion

  • Avoid getting the eye area when applying this lotion to the face
  • Take care when using this lotion in the shower or bath as it may make surfaces slippery
  • If you have ever experienced a reaction to other products that contain any of these ingredients, whether it be severe or mild and including local skin reactions, do not use this lotion

Can pregnant or breastfeeding women use Dermol 500 Lotion?

There have been no reports of problems with using this lotion while pregnant or breastfeeding and therefore it can be used in these circumstances, however, do speak to your GP or pharmacist before using this lotion if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can I use Dermol 500 Lotion with other medicines?

This lotion is not known to affect any other medicine but you should still inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medicines you may be taking to ensure there isn’t a risk of interaction between the medicines. If you’re using other creams as well as Dermol 500, avoid using them at the same time on the same area of skin. Instead, allow enough time between applications to ensure the first product has soaked in before applying another product.

Are there any side effects?

Every medicine has some side effects, and in the case of Dermol 500 Lotion there are limited side effects which are often rare and not everyone will experience them. If you experience side effects such as swelling of the face, tongue or throat, a sudden itchy skin rash with hives, wheezing, difficulty breathing, dizziness, a metallic taste in your mouth, or you collapse, stop using this lotion and seek medical attention immediately as these are signs of a severe allergic reaction.

In rare cases, Dermol 500 Lotion may cause skin reactions on the application site. Stop using and speak to your doctor if this side effect becomes bothersome or your skin condition has worsened.

How to use Dermol 500 Lotion

You can use this product as often as you like on the skin either as a leave-on treatment or as an alternative to soap. To keep skin hydrated throughout the day or night, gently smooth the lotion into the skin and allow to soak in. You can then reapply as often as you look but if you’re using other products allow some time between each application.

Use Dermol 500 Lotion as a soap, although it won’t lather like ordinary soaps it will leave your skin feeling clean and soft. Use it in the bath or shower with warm water instead of hot as hot water can dry out the skin and further aggravate skin conditions.
