What is DF118 Forte and what does it do?

DF118 Forte is a tablet indicated for the relief of severe, chronic pain, for example caused by conditions such as sciatica, Paget’s disease and shingles.

DF118 Forte tablets contain 40mg of the active ingredient dihydrocodeine tartrate. Dihydrocodeine tartrate relieves pain by stimulating opiate receptors in the brain.

What counts as chronic pain?

Chronic pain is usually defined as a pain that lasts for longer than 3 months. DF118 Forte may be used to relieve chronic pain if other types of painkillers, such as paracetamol, Co-codamol or Ibuprofen have not proved to provide enough relief.

When is DF118 Forte prescribed?

DF118 Forte may be prescribed to relieve moderate to severe pain due to sciatica, shingles, Paget’s disease or pain caused by other chronic conditions. It is a prescription only medicine that may be prescribed when other types of pain relief have been tested but proved ineffective.

Note, long term use of DF118 Forte may lead to dependence. Always consult your GP before stopping the treatment or adjusting the dose of DF118 Forte. Do not use this medicine for longer than instructed by the doctor.

Is DF118 Forte suitable for my condition?

This is determined by our doctors. Before issuing a prescription, they will consider your medical history and any other medicines you may take as well as any other medical conditions you may have.

Some conditions and medicines can affect how DF118 Forte works, hence we ask you to answer a comprehensive questionnaire at the time of ordering.

DF118 Forte may not be suitable if any of the below applies to you:

  • If you are allergic to Dihydrocodeine or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.
  • If you are currently taking or recently have taken any medicines for the treatment of depression, such as MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors).
  • If you suffer from any breathing difficulties, including asthma attacks.
  • If you are suffering from severe headaches or a head injury.
  • If you suffer from alcoholism.
  • If you suffer from any heart problems as the result of a lung disease.
  • If you are suffering from stomach pains.

What is the recommended dosage of DF118 Forte?

You should follow the doctor’s instructions on how to take DF118 Forte. The doses outlined below is for your reference only. Unless instructed differently by the doctor or pharmacist, take your tablet(s) with or after food.

Never exceed the stated dose.

DF118 Forte doses for adults:

Take 1 or 2 tablets, three times per day. Do not exceed 6 tablets in any 24 hour period.

Does DF118 Forte cause any side effects?

Yes, all medicines can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Possible side effects from taking DF118 Forte include:

  • Hallucinations.
  • Changes in mood.
  • Feeling or being unwell.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Sweating.
  • Facial flushing.
  • Constipation.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Decrease in sex drive or problems with maintaining an erection.

Can I reduce the risk of getting side effects?

  • Do not drink alcohol while taking DF118 Forte tablets.
  • While filling in the medical questionnaire, remember to include any other medicines you are taking. DF118 Forte can affect how other medicines work, so it is important that you tell our doctors about all medicine you take, including any over the counter medication and supplements.
  • Read through the patient information leaflet to find out whether to take the medicine with food or on empty stomach. Some medicines can cause stomach upset when taken on an empty stomach.
