Disposable face mask

Disposable face masks such as these are made in the same style as classic surgical masks that are worn by healthcare professionals. However, it’s important to note that these civilian 3 ply face masks aren’t suitable for medical use, and should only be worn by members of the public that are wanting to cover their mouth and nose to protect themselves from pathogens and harmful substances.

3 ply face mask

These 3-ply face masks are designed to be worn by civilians that aren’t working in healthcare or looking after someone that is suspected to be ill. This is because they haven’t received an FFP2 or FFP3 rating. However, they are still suitable for protecting you against pathogens that may be contained in droplets, or even against pollen if you suffer from hay fever.

The style of the 3 ply face mask means that they’re breathable whist still providing protection, and are easy to fit if correct instructions are followed.

These surgical-style face masks should only be used once, and should be disposed of either when you take it off, or if it becomes soiled – whichever comes first.

Hygiene mask

These hygiene masks are non-woven and are made from spun-bonded polypropylene in order to make them as safe as possible and to keep you protected from droplets that may contain harmful pathogens.

Hygiene masks such as these that are designed to be worn over the mouth and nose should be applied correctly for best results, otherwise you risk the mask becoming contaminated, which can increase your risk of illness.

Before you put on a 3-ply mask, you should wash your hands thoroughly and make sure that they’re completely dry before touching the fabric. This ensures that the mask stays dry and avoids moisture, which can create an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

You should also make sure that you only touch the outside of the mask (the blue side) to make sure that you don’t contaminate the side that will be against your nose and mouth. When positioning the mask over your face, you should make sure that the plastic strip is at the top, resting on the bridge of your nose. Once you’ve placed it in the right position, you should pull each loop over your ears, and pinch the plastic strip to make a tighter fit. Whilst the surgical-style face masks don’t form a seal, making sure that the strip is snug against your face can help it to work to its maximum potential, as loose-fitting masks are more likely to allow harmful substances and pathogens to reach your face.

When it comes to removing the mask, you should wash your hands again, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, and take the mask off by the loops. You should avoid touching the front of the mask at all times after it has been applied and during removal, as it may be contaminated. Once you’ve removed the mask by the ear loops, you should dispose of it properly and wash your hands once again to make sure that they’re clean and free from bacteria, viruses or bodily fluids.

Where to buy face masks

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks have been in high-demand, often causing supply issues. Doctor4U now sells 3 ply face masks for civilians in packs of 50, meaning that you and your family should have enough to protect yourselves when out in public, or in the presence of someone who is displaying symptoms.

Is a surgical mask a respirator?

Surgical-style masks are not the same as respirators, and the two names should not be used interchangeably. Respirators generally protect you from particles and airborne substances, whilst face covers that are manufactured in the style of a surgical mask generally only protect you from droplets such as fluid from coughs, sneezes, and other bodily fluids that may be contaminated.

If you’re looking to buy a respirator mask rather than a 3-ply Type 1 mask, you should visit this page where you can read more about them.
