Domperidone

Domperidone is used for the short-term treatment of nausea and vomiting. It works by blocking certain receptors in your body which send messages to and from the brain and digestive system that make you feel nauseous.

Domperidone reduces the symptoms of nausea and vomiting, as well as being used to treat gastroparesis, but it won’t cure your condition or the cause of your nausea.

Domperidone should only be taken for 7 days, and most people find that their symptoms are resolved within 2-3 days. If your symptoms don’t improve within this time, or if they worsen at all, you should talk to your own GP or ring NHS 111 if you’re unsure about what to do.

Domperidone may increase your risk of heart rhythm disorder or cardiac arrest, but the doctor will decide with you whether it’s a suitable medicine to take or whether there may be better alternatives taking your overall health into account.

What is Domperidone?

Domperidone is a medicine that’s prescribed to relieve nausea and vomiting as well as some of the symptoms of gastroparesis. Symptoms of gastroparesis include:

  • Feeling full quickly
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Heartburn

Domperidone is a dopamine agonist, and it works by blocking certain dopamine receptors in the upper end of the digestive tract as well as in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the brain. By blocking these receptors, nausea and vomiting is reducing, helping patients who struggle with it.

Can I take Domperidone?

Domperidone will only be prescribed to you if the doctor feels you are a suitable candidate for the medication. There is some concern that the drug may increase the risk of heart rhythm disorder and cardiac arrest, so your own GP will look at your personal and family medical history to see whether Domperidone is a safe medicine for you.

There are some people that need to take caution when considering Domperidone, and a consultation with your own GP is always recommended. Those that need to take extra care include people with any of the following medical conditions or complaints:

  • Allergic to any of the ingredients in Domperidone
  • Black, tarry stools
  • Blockage or tear in the intestines
  • Tumour of the pituitary gland
  • Moderate to severe liver disease
  • Prolonged QT corrected interval
  • Heart failure
  • Low or high levels of potassium in the blood
  • Low levels of magnesium in the blood

If you aren’t sure if any of the above apply to you, please see your doctor before requesting Domperidone as it might not be the most suitable treatment for you.

Does Domperidone interact with any other drugs?

Domperidone is a medicine that can interact with some others. Examples of drugs that you should be cautious with are:

  • Some antifungal medications
  • Some antibiotics (erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin, mofifloxacin, pentamidine)
  • Some medicines for the heart or high blood pressure (amiodarone, dronedarone, quinidine, disopyramide, dofetilide, solatol, diltiazem, verapamil)
  • Some psychoses (haloperidol, pimozide, sertindole)
  • Some medicines for depression (citalopram, escitalopram)
  • Some medicines for GI disorders (cisapride, dolasteron, prucalopride)
  • Some medicines for allergies (mequitazine, mizolastine)
  • Malaria medicines (halofantrine)
  • Protease inhibitors for HIV
  • Some cancer drugs (toremifene, vandetanib, vincamine)

If you recognise any of the medications listed above, you should avoid taking Domperidone until you’ve spoken to your doctor. It might be unsafe for you to use the medication, or there might be alternative treatments for you to use.

Can I take Domperidone if I’m pregnant?

We would advise that you speak to your own GP about what medications you can and can’t take whilst pregnant. Whilst Domperidone is a medicine for nausea and vomiting, and these symptoms are common during pregnancy, there may be a more suitable drug for you to take.

What are the side effects of Domperidone?

Domperidone can cause some side effects that might be unpleasant, but many people find that the benefits of the medication outweigh the side effects that they experience. Some of the most commonly reported symptoms associated with the use of Domperidone include:

  • Allergic reaction (if you think you may be having an allergic reaction to the medicine, stop taking it immediately and seek urgent advice either via NHS 111 or by visiting your nearest A&E department, taking the packet of medicine with you).
  • Dry mouth
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Sleepiness
  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Rash or itchiness
  • Painful or tender breasts
  • Feeling of weakness

There are more side effects listed in the patient information leaflet that comes with your order, and you should familiarise yourself with them to make sure you’re aware of what you might experience as a result of taking the drug. If you do experience any side effects, you should report them to your doctor. If you notice anything that isn’t listed above, you can report the new symptom via the MHRA yellow card app.

How do you take Domperidone?

Domperidone should be swallowed with water. You can take one tablet up to three times per day, usually before meals.

Once you’ve taken Domperidone, you should wait 15-30 minutes before eating. Domperidone is only to be taken short-term, as symptoms should resolve within 2-3 days. It isn’t recommended for you to take Domperidone for longer than 7 days without talking to your own GP as the symptoms you’re experiencing may be a sign of an underlying condition. If your symptoms don’t ease, or even get worse within the 7-day timeframe, please make an appointment to see your doctor and talk about alternative options.
