What is Duac Gel and what does it do?

Duac Once Daily Gel, throughout this description referred to as “Duac Gel”, belongs to a group of medicines known as anti-acne preparations. It contains the active ingredient clindamycin and works by reducing the amount of bacteria causing acne.

Duac Gel also contains anhydrous benzoyl peroxide which helps to reduce bacteria while unblocking sebaceous glands.

When is Duac Gel prescribed?

Duac Gel can be prescribed for the treatment of mild to moderate acne. It is a topical treatment that may be recommended to you before trying other tablets or capsules. Duac Gel starts to work on the skin immediately, but it may take 2 - 5 weeks before you notice visible results.

Is Duac Gel suitable for my condition?

The suitability of Duac Gel is determined by our doctor. However, Duac Gel is likely to be suitable if you have mild to moderate acne as long as the below does not apply to you:

  • You are allergic to Duac Gel or any of the ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.
  • You have or have ever had regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis or antibiotic-associated colitis.

Do not use Duac Gel on sensitive areas of skin or on broken, cut, grazed or sunburnt skin.

What is the recommended dosage of Duac Gel?

You should follow the doctor’s instructions on how to use this medicine. The doses outlined below is for your reference only. The gel should be applied once daily in the evening.

Do not use for longer than 12 weeks at one time.

How to apply Duac Gel:

Make sure your skin is completely free from any makeup before applying the gel.

Apply a thin layer of gel with your fingertips to the affected area of skin. It is important that you apply the gel to the whole area affected, and not just the individual spots.

How much Duac Gel to apply:

The gel should be gently rubbed into your skin. If the gel is does not rub in easily, you are using to much Duac Gel.

If the gel is only applied to your face, use the amount of a ‘finger tip’. A finger tip is measured from the tip of your finger to the first joint (the first crease/horizontal ‘line’ at the top of your finger).

If the gel is used for your face and back, use the amount of 2.5 ‘finger tips’ in total.

Always wash your hands after applying the gel.

Does Duac Gel cause any side effects?

Yes, all medicines can cause side effects. Although not everyone gets them.

Common side effects from using Duac Gel includes:

  • Redness of the skin, peeling skin, dryness.
  • Burning and pain in the area of application, increased sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Headache.

You should consult your GP or nearest clinic immediately if you notice any of the below side effects as these can indicate a severe allergic reaction:

  • Swelling of your face, eyes, lips or tongue.
  • Nettle rash.
  • Difficulty breathing or collapse.

Can I reduce the risk of getting side effects?

Yes, always start by reading the patient information leaflet. This will help you get the most out of your treatment, learn how to apply it and if there are any other medicines that can interact with Duac Gel. You can also reduce the risk of side effects by:

  • Remembering to mention any other medicines you are taking when filling in the medical questionnaire. Duac Gel can affect how other medicines work, so it is important that you tell our doctors about all medicine you take. Don’t forget to also include over the counter medication and supplements.
