What is Dulcolax and how does it work?

Dulcolax is a type of medicine known as a stimulant laxative and it’s used to increase bowel movements to provide short term relief from constipation, a condition that causes difficulty passing stools. Stools become stuck in the colon which can cause stomach ache, bloating, and sickness, Dulcolax helps to get things moving again and relieve the symptoms of constipation. This medicine contains bisacodyl which works by softening the stools and increasing bowel movements to help push the stools out of your system. As well as relieving constipation, bisacodyl is often used before surgery or a certain treatment to empty the patient’s bowel.

Who is Dulcolax suitable for?

Dulcolax tablets are suitable for adults who have not been able to pass stools as regularly as they normally would (constipated). You shouldn’t give these tablets to anyone under the age of 18 unless it has been recommended by a doctor. Your doctor may recommend it as a treatment for your child’s constipation.

Who shouldn’t take Dulcolax tablets?

Some people are not suitable to take this medicine and you should speak to your doctor about alternative medication to treat your constipation. Dulcolax is not suitable for you if you have an allergy to bisacodyl or any other ingredient in this medicine, allergic reactions can be serious so you must avoid this medicine if you’re aware that you have an allergy to it. Dulcolax tablets are not suitable if you have any of the following conditions or bowel problems:

  • Severe dehydration - you don’t want to risk losing anymore fluids from your body. Go to A&E or call 999 urgently if you’re showing signs of severe dehydration such as dizziness, confusion, fatigue, and possibly seizures
  • Severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting
  • Blockage in your bowel
  • Inflammation of the bowel
  • Appendictis
  • Bowel condition called ileus

Dulcolax tablets contain lactose and sucrose so if you have an intolerance to sugars you should speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking this medicine.

Can you take Dulcolax while pregnant or breastfeeding?

You should speak to your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to get pregnant. Medicines containing bisacodyl are not normally recommended for those who are breastfeeding or pregnant, particularly in the first three months of pregnancy. You should eat plenty of fibre and drink lots of water to help your constipation if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding and your doctor may recommend an alternative laxative if needed that is safer for you and your baby.

Can Dulcolax laxative be taken with any other medicines?

You shouldn’t take any other type of laxative while taking Dulcolax. Dulcolax tablets may affect or be affected by other medicines such as diuretics including bendrofluazide and furosemide, and steroid medicines including prednisolone. Do not take Dulcolax if you’re taking any of these medicines and inform your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you may be taking.

Do not take proton pump inhibitors, antacids, or drink milk within one hour before or after taking Dulcolax as they can interact and stop this medicine from working properly and make it an ineffective treatment. Taking these types of medicines together may also irritate your stomach.

How to take Dulcolax tablets

To treat constipation in adults, 1-2 tablets should be taken at night. You may start with one tablet if you’ve not taken Dulcolax before and increase to two if necessary. Be careful not to overuse this medicine as it can be harmful, this means not taking it every day for more than 5 days. If you find yourself needing to taking this medicine for longer as your constipation is not improving, you should consult your doctor to find the underlying cause of your constipation. Dulcolax is only designed to be used occasionally for short term relief.

How long do Dulcolax tablets take to work?

Dulcolax tablets can start to work within 6-12 hours. In the meantime, drink plenty of water and increase your intake of fibre to help soften the stools and help your constipation. Avoid foods such as dairy products while you are constipated as this can make it worse.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects can occur with any medicine although not everyone will experience them. The most common side effects associated with Dulcolax tablets are nausea, abdominal pain or cramps, and possibly diarrhoea. It’s less common to experience blood in your stools, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, discomfort inside and around the back passage, and dizziness.

In rare cases, you may experience a severe allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention and you must stop taking the tablets straight away if symptoms occur such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or a skin reaction. Other rare side effects include a condition which causes inflammation of the large intestine known as colitis, you may experience abdominal pain and diarrhoea as a result. Dehydration and fainting have also been reported in rare cases.
