What is Duofilm and how does it work?

Duofilm wart treatment helps to clear warts by softening the wart enough for it to easily peel off. It contains two active ingredients known as salicylic acid and lactic acid which belong to a group of medicines called keratolytics. These ingredients work together to soften keratin, a protein that is involved in the formation of skin, it also helps to exfoliate these skin cells. This encourages the wart to fall away from the skin more easily.

Why do warts appear?

Warts appear as small skin growths which can sometimes be painful and itchy, but many people feel embarrassed due to the appearance of warts. Warts are quite common and they’re caused by a virus known as the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can be easily transmitted from person to person through skin to skin contact, the virus can also come into contact with your skin if you touch certain surfaces or objects that have been touched by a person with an active infection. The virus is more likely to enter the body through broken skin, it’s also more likely to spread in moist environments such as showers or pool areas, or by sharing towels.

What type of warts is this treatment suitable for?

This treatment is to be used on warts that most commonly appear on the hands and feet, it is not a suitable treatment for genital warts which is caused by a different strain of the virus. If you have warts anywhere on your genitals or anus, Duofilm is not a suitable treatment.

Who shouldn’t use Duofilm wart remover?

Duofilm treatment is not suitable for some people and if any of the following applies to you do not use this medicine. This includes those who:

  • Are allergic to salicylic acid, lactic acid, or any other ingredients in this medicine
  • Have warts on any sensitive areas such as the face, anus or back passage area, genitals, or moles, birthmarks, or warts with hairs growing on them - do not use Duofilm on these areas
  • Has irritated, red, or infected skin - do not use on broken skin or open wounds
  • This medicine is also unsuitable for children under the age of 2 years

Duofilm is also not recommended for people with certain health problems such as diabetes, poor circulation, or nerve damage to the hands or feet. If you’re currently suffering from any sort of viral illness such as chickenpox or flu, or have recently recovered from this type of illness, Duofilm will not be a suitable treatment for you.

Can I treat warts with Duofilm if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Duofilm is not recommended for use by those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should always seek the advice of your doctor or pharmacist when it comes to taking medicines during pregnancy, your doctor can weigh up the benefits and risks of using this medicine but it’s not usually recommended in these circumstances. Your doctor will be able to recommend alternative treatments for your warts that are safe for you and your baby.

Can I use other medicines with Duofilm wart treatment?

Other medicines must not be used on the affected area at the same time as Duofilm as there is a risk of interaction, or Duofilm may increase the absorption of other medicines.

Are there any side effects with Duofilm use?

All medicines come with side effects, and you may experience side effects with Duofilm but this won’t happen to everyone. Upon application, you may get some irritation on the affected area, or burning sensation, there may be some dryness or peeling on the application site. In rare cases, an allergic skin reaction can occur which may cause irritation, a rash, swelling, itching, redness, and blistering, this can also happen if it’s applied on healthy skin. If the irritation is severe stop using the medicine and see your doctor as soon as possible.

How do you use Duofilm wart remover?

Take care when using wart treatment and use your own tools and towel, do not share anything that has been used for the treatment of warts as it could be spread to other people. Firstly remove any plasters or anything that is covering the wart, you then need to soak the water in hot water for 5 minutes, make sure the water isn’t too hot as it may burn. Once soaked, gently rub the wart with a pumice stone or nail file and then cover the water with Duofilm but avoid the healthy skin around the wart. Let the solution dry into the wart thoroughly and you may want to cover it with a plaster and wear socks if the wart is underneath your foot.

How long before I will see results?

It will take around 4 to 8 weeks before you see noticeable results. You should continue treatment for 12 weeks but if warts have not improved after 12 weeks see your doctor for advice.
