What is DuoResp Spiromax?

DuoResp Spiromax is a treatment taken with an inhaler in order to suppress symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). When prescribed this medication, patients will take it on a daily basis, even if no symptoms are showing at the time. Its intention is to prevent breathing difficulties associated with an asthma attack from happening.

How does DuoResp Spiromax work?

This treatment contains two substances which are called Budesonide and Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate. Budesonide belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids (known more simply as just steroids). It helps a patient’s breathing by reducing and preventing swelling and inflammation in the lung. Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate is part of a group of medicines known as bronchodilators. It relaxes the muscles in your airwaves, which makes them open up more and improves breathing further.

How do I use DuoResp Spiromax?

Your doctor and product information leaflet should provide detailed instructions on how to use and maintain your inhaler correctly. The recommended dosage is one inhalation on two occasions per day. One dose will be taken in the morning and the other will be taken in the evening. This applies whether you are treating asthma or COPD.

Your doctor may adjust your dosage depending on how you respond to the treatment. If you have any sudden attacks of breathlessness and wheezing, then use a separate ‘reliever’ inhaler in response, since DuoResp Spiromax is not meant for such a situation. An example of a ‘reliever’ treatment is Salbutamol. If you are treating COPD, then your doctor may prescribe an additional bronchodilator medicine to take for your condition (such as tiotropium).

What are the side effects of DuoResp Spiromax?

Like with all medicines, it is possible to experience side effects while using DuoResp Spiromax, but not all patients will experience any. The most common side effects that could potentially be experienced include the following:

  • Palpitations (awareness of your heart beating). Usually mild and disappear after continued use of this medication
  • Trembling or shaking. Again, these are usually mild and disappear after continued use of this medication
  • Thrush in the mouth. This is less likely to occur if you rinse your mouth out with water just after using the medication
  • Mild sore throat plus coughing and a hoarse voice
  • Headaches
  • Pneumonia in COPD patients

Other side effects are possible but are also rarely reported. Some of the rare side effects can prove very serious, so stop using this medication and seek medical help if any of the following is experienced by you:

  • Swelling around the face, mouth, tongue and/or throat plus possible difficulty in swallowing or breathing. These are indications you could be experiencing an allergic reaction
  • Bronchospasm, which means the muscles in the airways tighten which causes wheezing and shortness of breath
  • Sudden, unexpected and acute wheezing or shortness of breath immediately after using your inhaler. This is known as paradoxical bronchospasm and if it happens, use your reliever inhaler in response

Can I use DuoResp Spiromax?

Before you start using this medication, extra checks and caution may be required for you depending on your health circumstances. Speak to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking DuoResp Spiromax if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are pregnant, breast-feeding or think you may be pregnant
  • You are diabetic
  • You have a lung infection
  • You have high blood pressure or have had a heart problem in the past
  • You have problems with your thyroid or adrenal glands
  • You have low levels of potassium in your blood
  • You have severe liver problems
  • You regularly drink alcohol

Certain medicines could create a disruptive effect if taken at the same time as DuoResp Spiromax. Let your doctor or pharmacist know about any other medication you’re currently using, particularly if you’re taking any of the following:

  • Beta blockers
  • Oxytocin (given to pregnant women to induce labour)
  • Medicines for treating a fast or uneven heartbeat (such as quinidine and procainamide)
  • Medicines for treating infections (such as ketoconazole and itraconazole)
  • Medicines for treating Parkinson’s disease (such as levodopa)
  • Medicines for treating thyroid problems (such as levothyroxine)
  • Medicines like digoxin (often used to treat heart failure)
  • Diuretics (also called water tablets) used to treat high blood pressure
  • Steroid tablets (such as prednisolone)
  • Xanthine medicines which are often used to treat asthma (such as theophylline and aminophylline)
  • Other bronchodilators (such as salbutamol)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants and the antidepressant nefazodone
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors or any other antidepressant medicine with similar properties
  • Antipsychotic phenothiazine medicines (such as chlorpromazine and prochlorperazine)
  • HIV protease inhibitors that treat HIV infection (such as ritonavir)

What if I take too large a dose of this medicine?

If you accidentally take a larger dose of this medicine than you were meant to, then contact your doctor as soon as possible for advice. Common symptoms following a larger than recommended dose of DuoResp Spiromax include headaches, trembling and a rapid heartbeat.

What if I forget a dose of this medicine?

If you forget to take a dose of DuoResp Spiromax, then take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for the following dose. If this is the case, then just take the next dose at the usual time. Never take a double dose to make up for any forgotten doses.
