Elleste

Elleste tablets are a type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) which treat the symptoms that can be experienced during the menopause. There are two types of these tablets available, with one being called Elleste Solo, which contains the hormone oestrogen. It is recommended to women who have had their womb surgically removed (a hysterectomy). There’s also Elleste Duet, which adds oestrogen and another hormone called norethisterone, and it’s better suited for women that still have their womb. Duet is considered a combined form of HRT.

What is Elleste?

Elleste Solo and Elleste Duet tablets are used for hormone replacement therapy (HRT). They are used to relieve symptoms of the menopause when it begins to significantly affect a person’s quality of life. Elleste Duet contains a single hormone called oestrogen, while Elleste Duet adds two hormones, making it a combined form of HRT. Both Solo and Duet forms of Elleste are also considered a cyclical type of HRT, meaning they may be recommended when menopausal symptoms have begun but regular periods have not yet completely stopped.

How does Elleste work?

Elleste Solo and Duet contain the hormone oestrogen, or more specifically a synthetic version called estradiol. Oestrogen is naturally produced in the body by women, but the amount they create is diminished during the menopause. It’s this reduction that leads to menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, so HRT covers for this natural drop in the hormone.

Oestrogen-only treatments like Elleste Solo are typically used by women who have had their womb surgically removed. That’s because the increase in oestrogen levels unopposed can increase the risk of cancer developing in the uterus. To counter this, women who still have their womb can use a combined HRT like Elleste Duet which adds an additional hormone called norethisterone, which works to keeps oestrogen levels in check.

How is Elleste taken?

When you begin taking Elleste tablets, the normal dosage is one each day and preferably always around the same time. These instructions are followed until all tablets in a strip are taken and then the sequence is repeated the day after with the following strip. Each tablet is swallowed whole with water.

With Elleste Duet, there are two types of tablets contained in the strips which are colour-coded a certain way depending on their strength. 16 tablets will be white or orange and these are taken first, followed by the next 12 tablets in a strip which are pale green or grey. The packs of medicine and the strips will include instructions on how to take your course of tablets correctly if you’re ever unsure.

The time to start your course of treatment depends on your circumstances, such as whether you are using HRT for the first time or switching over from a different one. If you are currently taking another HRT, then you should finish that course before moving on to Elleste tablets the following day. If this is your first time using HRT, then you can start with the medication immediately if you are not having regular periods. If, however, you are still having regular periods, you should start the course on the first day of bleeding.

What are the side effect of Elleste?

Numerous side effects are possible to occur to you while taking Elleste tablets, regardless of type or strength. The most common side effects reported with this particular HRT are nothing to be that scared about but do include the following:

  • Headaches
  • Breast pain and tenderness
  • Painful periods
  • Problems with your menstrual cycle
  • Stomach cramps and feeling of sickness
  • Changes in weight
  • Swelling of legs
  • Mood changes
  • Changes in sex drive

More serious side effects are uncommon but not impossible and it’s best to contact your doctor for advice if you do experience any side effects that are alarming. It has also been found that certain health issues are more commonly reported with women who use HRT compared to those who do not use such treatment. The conditions include:

  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Cancer of the lining of the womb
  • Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Probably loss of memory if HRT is started over the age of 65

Can I use Elleste?

Before starting a course of Elleste tablets, you should confirm you do not have any conditions or are using any medication that could create complications. Avoid hormone replacement therapy like this if you have any of these health issues:

  • You have or have previously had breast cancer
  • You have a cancer that’s sensitive to oestrogens (e.g. cancer of the womb lining)
  • You’re experiencing unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • You have excessive thickening of the womb lining that has not been treated
  • You have or have previously had a blood clot in a vein such as in the legs or lungs
  • You have a blood clotting disorder
  • You have a disease caused by blood clots in the arteries (e.g. heart attack, stroke or angina)
  • You have or have previously had a liver disease and your liver function tests have not returned to normal
  • You have a rare blood issue called porphyria

You should also inform your doctor of any other medication which you are currently taking or have recently used. The following medications can create side effects such as irregular bleeding if used at the same time as Elleste:

  • Medicines for epilepsy (such as phenobarbital, phenytoin and carbamazepine)
  • Medicines for tuberculosis (such as rifampicin and rifabutin)
  • Medicines for HIV infection (such as nevirapine and telaprevir)
  • Herbal remedies containing St. John’s Wort

What if I take too many tablets?

If you take more Elleste tablets than you’re meant to, then there shouldn’t be any major issues. However, it’s possible you’ll experience side effects such as breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, irregular periods, mood swings, acne or fatigue. If you’re worried about your reaction to taking too much of this treatment, then contact your doctor as soon as possible.
