How does Elleste Solo MX work?
Elleste Solo MX is a transdermal patch worn on the skin and contains the active ingredient estradiol which comes out of the patch and through the skin. Estradiol is a synthetic version of oestrogen and this is gradually released into the body to replace the body’s natural hormones which are declining.

HRT such as Elleste Solo MX is suitable for women who are experiencing severe symptoms as a result of the ovaries not producing enough oestrogen. This treatment is prescribed to women whose daily lives are hindered by the menopause.
Who is Elleste Solo not suitable for?
This treatment is for menopausal women only and is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Some menopausal women may not be suitable if they’re taking other medication which may interact with Elleste Solo or if they have a health condition which could be made worse by taking this medication, or puts you at risk of developing health complications.
Before using Estelle Solo MX you should tell your doctor about any medication you may be taking or health condition that you may have.
Elleste Solo MX and health conditions
There are some medical conditions which could make Elleste Solo unsafe for use in some people. If you have any of the following conditions you should not use this treatment. Do not use Elleste Solo if you:
- Have or have had breast cancer
- Have any cancer which is sensitive to oestrogens
- Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
- Have endometrial hyperplasia that is untreated
- Have ever had thrombosis (blood clot) in the legs or lungs
- Have a blood clotting disorder
- Have had a heart attack, stroke, or angina
- Have liver disease
- Have a rare, inherited blood problem called porphyria
- Have thrombophlebitis
- Have an allergy to estradiol or any other ingredient in this medication
Allergic reactions can be serious and life threatening, and if you’re aware that you have an allergy to this medication you should avoid it. If you experience an allergic reaction while using this medication you should stop using it and seek medical help immediately. You may have other medical conditions which may make you unsuitable for this treatment, and this is something you will need to discuss with your doctor. For instance, you should tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or asthma as these may become worse during HRT.
Elleste Solo MX and other medication
Before using Elleste Solo you should tell your doctor if you’re on any other medication whether it be prescription, non-prescription, or herbal products. This is to ensure that Elleste Solo does not interfere with these medicines and vice versa. There are some medicines which do interact with Elleste Solo and these include:
- Medicines for epilepsy such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, and carbamazepine
- Medicines for tuberculosis such as rifampicin and rifabutin
- Medicines for HIV such as nevirapine, efavirenz, ritonavir, and nelfinavir
- Coumarins - treatment for harmful blood clots
- Selegiline - treatment for Parkinson
- Herbal remedies containing St John’s Wort
If you’re diabetic and take diabetic medication such as insulin you may need to change the dose if you’re also using Elleste Solo.
You may need to use another form of contraception if you’re taking a hormonal contraceptive and using Elleste Solo. Elleste Solo is not a contraceptive.
How to use Elleste Solo MX
Apply one patch twice a week onto dry skin that isn’t broken or irritated, preferably on the lower back or buttocks. Start treatment right away if you no longer have periods, but if you’re still having periods start treatment within 5 days of your bleed. Replace the patch every 3-4 days, and apply a new patch on a seperate part of the skin to what you have just used.
Are there any side effects or risks of using Elleste Solo MX?
As with any medication there are side effects, however, not everyone will experience them. There is an increased risk of developing some conditions which is higher in women who take HRT than those who don’t. These include:
- Breast cancer
- Abnormal growth or cancer of the lining of the womb
- Ovarian cancer
- Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs
- Heart disease
- Memory loss if starting HRT over 65
These risks mean you will need to discuss your own medical history and family medical history with a doctor to determine whether your risks of developing these side effects is increased. When using HRT you will be monitored regularly and will need to go for regular breast screening and cervical smear tests.
A doctor can tell you all of the risks and benefits of taking HRT so you can informed decision about whether this treatment is right for you. Some of the above side effects are rare, more common side effects which may affect 1 in 10 people include tender breasts, headaches, and breakthrough bleeding.
