Elocon Scalp Lotion

Elocon scalp lotion can be used to treat symptoms of psoriasis or dermatitis which affect skin around the scalp. These conditions can cause patches of skin to become red, itchy and scaly on the scalp and other areas of the body, but elocon is effective in reducing such symptoms. Suitable to be used by both adults and children, elocon scalp lotion contains a substance called mometasone furoate, a type of topical corticosteroid which blocks the production of certain natural substances which can cause skin inflammation. This lotion is typically used on a daily basis when prescribed, although the frequency of treatment can be reduced over time (when advised to do so by your doctor) as symptoms gradually improve.

Elocon Scalp Lotion explained

Elocon scalp lotion is a medication used on the scalp to reduce redness and itchiness caused by certain conditions including psoriasis and dermatitis. This lotion can be used on either adults and children to treat their scalp whenever it is being affected by a condition this medication is meant to treat.

Symptoms of the skin disease known as psoriasis include the presence of itchy, scaly and pink patches on the scalp or other parts of the skin. Dermatitis can cause skin on the scalp and other areas to become red and itchy and is the result of the skin reacting to outside agents (such as detergents, for example). If you or your child is experiencing symptoms like these on your scalp, then elocon scalp lotion may be prescribed and should prove an effective solution.

How Elocon Scalp Lotion works

Elocon scalp lotion contains mometasone furoate as its active ingredient. It is a topical corticosteroid, classified more specifically as a ‘potent corticosteroid’. It is able to treat skin conditions which cause inflammation and irritation by acting within skin cells to prevent the release of natural substances responsible for inflammatory symptoms. By holding off these substances, this medicine gives the skin the chance to reduce redness, swelling and itchiness and therefore prevents scratching that further irritates the skin.

Who can use Elocon Scalp Lotion?

If you or your child is suffering from symptoms of dermatitis or psoriasis on the scalp, then you may be prescribed elocon scalp lotion by a doctor. Keep in mind that this treatment is meant only for treating the scalp specifically. This lotion is not recommended for children under the age of 2.

There are certain other conditions you may have which can prevent you from using elocon scalp lotion safely. Make sure when you have a consultation with your doctor about getting this treatment that you answer all questions you’re given honestly so that you can stay safe. You (or the child being considered for this treatment) should not use elocon scalp lotion if you (or the child) currently have any of the following problems on the scalp:

  • Chickenpox
  • Shingles
  • Warts
  • Ulcerated skin
  • Wounds
  • Skin atrophy (thinning of the skin)
  • Other skin infections

If you have any other type of problem with your scalp which is not listed above, you should talk to your doctor about this so they can decide if it is appropriate for elocon to be used. Furthermore, if you are using any other medicines or you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding, then inform your doctor or local pharmacist about this before you start using elocon scalp lotion.

How to use Elocon Scalp Lotion

The usual instructions for this lotion are to apply a few drops to the affected area of the scalp once a day and then gently massage the treatment into the skin until the lotion disappears. The hair can be either wet or dry when applying this medication to the scalp.

If this treatment is being used on a child, then they should be treated with elocon scalp lotion for more than five days. You should check with your doctor before covering any treated areas with a plaster or bandage.

It’s important to follow your doctor’s advice on how long to use this treatment for. If you notice over time that your scalp problems are getting better, then you should not suddenly stop using this lotion since the symptoms could come back strong. To avoid this, you should speak to your doctor to keep track of your treatment progress. They will gradually reduce how often you need to use this lotion until it becomes the right time to stop treatment altogether.

Does Elocon Scalp Lotion cause side effects?

Elocon scalp lotion can potentially cause side effects, as is the case with other medicines, but they are not common so the vast majority of patients won’t notice any. There is a small possibility that users of this lotion could experience one or multiple of the following side effects:

  • Bacterial and secondary skin infections
  • Acne
  • Inflammation and/or infection of the hair follicles
  • Thinning of the skin
  • Red marks with associate prickly heat
  • Loss of skin colour
  • Burning
  • Stinging
  • Itching
  • Tingling
  • Excessive hair growth
  • Softening of the skin and stretch marks
  • Blurred vision
  • Allergic skin reactions

If you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction or any other serious side effect, then stop using this medication and report the problem to your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department straight away. The list of side effects listed above may appear troubling and other side effects beyond this list could potentially occur, but it is again worth emphasising that such side effects are not common. So you will probably never experience any of these if you have been deemed suitable to use this lotion and you use it responsibly.
