How Does Emla Cream Work?

Due to its ingredients, lidocaine and prilocaine, Emla Cream is a local anaesthetic cream that works by blocking nerve signals to the applied area. It is used to numb the skin in preparation for minor surgery. This should be applied at least 1 hour before surgery. It will begin to numb the skin within 15 minutes, however it will take 60 minutes to provide pain relief. This cream can also be used as a premature ejaculation treatment by numbing the membrane surface of the penis. If used as a precaution for premature ejaculation, allow 15 minutes to pass before engaging in sexual activity. This will allow your body to absorb the cream and lower the chance of the medications numbing effects to be accidentally transferred to your partner via skin contact.

When using Emla Cream it is strictly important to apply the smallest amount possible, this treatment is absorbed by the skin and overuse can lead to fatal side effects. This medication should be used exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Never apply Emla Cream to broken or irritated skin and always ensure to wash your hands thoroughly after use to be sure that your hands don’t become numb.

This treatment cream should only ever be used as prescribed by your doctor if you are about to receive surgery or if you suffer from premature ejaculation. It should not be used by anyone as a common pain relief treatment and should never be taken if you are allergic to the ingredients (lidocaine and prilocaine).
