What is Estraderm MX?

Estraderm MX is a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) which comes in the form of an adhesive patch. The patch contains the hormone oestrogen and is available in four strengths. Applied to the skin, Estraderm MX is used to treat the effects of the menopause and can also be used against the bone-weakening condition osteoporosis.

This treatment is used by postmenopausal women when it has been at least 12 months since their last natural period. When a woman is going through the menopause, they may not need any medical support, but for some the symptoms can be severe enough to disrupt their daily life. Those more susceptible to osteoporosis are at increased risk of fracturing bones during the menopause. Estraderm MX is one of the many courses of HRT available to buy which tackles these symptoms.

Estraderm MX is recommended for use by women who have had their wombs removed. If you have not had your womb removed, the treatment will be supplied with a progestogen which is taken alongside Estraderm MX for around half of each monthly cycle. This combination is known as combined HRT. When being prescribed combined HRT, your doctor will likely provide progestogen in tablet form and they’ll explain the way you should take these tablets.

How does Estraderm MX work?

Each Estraderm MX patch contains a supply of the hormone oestrogen. When a patch is applied to the skin, the oestrogen is released and absorbed through the skin before entering the user’s blood stream. When using Estraderm MX, a patch is worn all the time until it’s time to replace it with the next one. The patches are stuck on to a hairless area of the skin below the waist. Patients often apply the patches on an area of the buttocks, but you could also try the lower back, hips or abdomen.

Estraderm MX patches come in four strengths and it is important you use the lowest possible effective dose. Your doctor or pharmacist will explain to you exactly how you should use this treatment if you are prescribed it. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you’re ever unsure about how to use Estraderm MX properly.

How long should I take Estraderm MX?

Estraderm MX is meant to be used only as long as necessary, which can vary depending on the patient and how strong the symptoms are.

You should apply a new patch twice a week every three or four days. From time to time, you should talk to your doctor about whether you still require the treatment.

What are the side effects of Estraderm MX?

Some side effects are commonly reported by users of Estraderm MX patches. The most likely that can occur include the following:

  • Pain, redness and itchiness around where the patch has been applied
  • Tender, painful or swollen breasts
  • Breakthrough bleeding
  • Headaches
  • Feeling sick or bloated

Other potential symptoms are more serious but also much rarer. Nevertheless, if you are experiencing symptoms which are particularly disruptive or indicate a serious health condition, it is worth contacting your doctor about them as soon as you can.

Certain diseases have been reported more often in women using HRT compared to women who do not use HRT. These diseases include the following:

  • Breast cancer
  • Abnormal growth or cancer found in the lining of the womb
  • Heart disease
  • Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Stroke
  • Memory loss if HRT is started over the age of 65

Can I use Estraderm MX?

Using Estraderm MX or any other form of HRT does carry risks which need to be considered before starting the treatment. Prior to starting, your doctor will ask about your own and your family’s medical history and may perform a physical examination. If you start using Estraderm MX, you should see your doctor for regular check-ups (at least once a year). It’s also worth having regular discussions with your doctor about your use of Estraderm MX and whether it’s worth continuing to use.

You should avoid taking Estraderm MX if you are experiencing or ever had the following conditions:

  • Breast cancer
  • Any form of cancer that is sensitive to oestrogens (e.g. cancer of the womb lining)
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Excessive thickening of the womb lining
  • Blood clot in a vein within the legs or lungs
  • A current or recent disease caused by a blood clot (e.g. heart attack, stroke or angina)
  • A rare blood problem named porphyria
  • Allergic to oestradiol
  • A liver disease which means your liver function tests have not yet returned to normal

You should also avoid taking Estraderm MX or any other HRT if you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s also not recommended that you take Estraderm MX if you’re experiencing a premature menopause (due to surgery or ovarian failure). In these circumstances, the risks of using HRT can be different, so talk to your doctor if you’re going through premature menopause.

What if an Estraderm MX patch falls off?

If an Estraderm MX patch falls off your skin before you planned to take it off, then it will not stick to your skin again. Instead of trying to put it back on, use another patch on a different area of your skin. Make sure to pick a clean, dry, lotion-free are of the skin, preferably below the waist.

Regardless of what day a patch falls off, go back to changing the patches under the same original routine on following days.
