Eucreas

Eucreas is a prescription medication used in the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, or, non-insulin dependent diabetes is a condition that affects the blood sugar levels in the body. There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2, and in people with type 2 diabetes the blood sugar levels become too high due to a lack of insulin production and too much glucose. Type 2 diabetes can develop later in life usually as a result of being overweight and inactive. It is a long term and life-threatening condition if it is not controlled.

To control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics, medication is prescribed. Eucreas contains the active ingredients, vildagliptin and metformin, which belong to a group of medicines known as oral antidiabetics. Eucreas is prescribed when the maximum dose of metformin alone does not control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics.

How does Eucreas work?

Vildagliptin and metformin are used to help the body control blood sugar levels. Vildagliptin does this by inhibiting dipeptidyl peptidase-4 to reduce the hormone, glucagon which increases blood sugar levels. This antidiabetic medicine helps the pancreas produce more insulin and less glucagon.

Metformin, another antidiabetic medicine, controls the amount of glucose produced by the liver and helps the body to respond to insulin better so it is used more effectively, and the excess sugar is removed from the blood.

By reducing blood sugar these medicines are helping to prevent further complications of diabetes such as heart attacks and strokes.

Who is Eucreas suitable for?

Eucreas is suitable for type 2 diabetics, as type 1 is often treated with daily insulin injections. Metformin is the first choice of medication for type 2 diabetics, but it is not always effective for everyone even at a high dose. When metformin alone is not effective it is combined with other drugs such as vildagliptin. Combination medicines are suitable when metformin alone is not effective at reducing blood sugar, and in turn the risk of serious complications of diabetes.

Who is Eucreas not suitable for?

However, not everyone is suitable for Eucreas either. There are a number of reasons why this medication is not suitable for some people, usually because of an existing health condition that may be affected by this medication, or if you’re taking other medication that may interact with Eucreas. If you’re taking other medication, have an existing health condition, or are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding, you should consult a GP before taking Eucreas.

Eucreas and pregnancy

Those who are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant or are breastfeeding have been warned against taking this medication. It has not been deemed safe to take this medication during pregnancy and this should be avoided. If you fall pregnant whilst taking this medication you should consult your GP immediately.

Some diabetics may not be suitable to take this medication if your condition is uncontrolled and if you have severe hyperglycaemia which is when blood sugar levels become too high. If you also have nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, sudden weight loss, lactic acidosis (buildup of lactate in the body) or ketoacidosis (buildup of ketones in the body) alongside uncontrolled diabetes, you should not take Eucreas.

You should also avoid this medication if you are allergic to any of the ingredients including metformin and vildagliptin.

Eucreas and other medication

It’s important to tell a doctor if you are currently taking any other medication before starting Eucreas, or if you are about to start taking another medication whilst you’re already on Eucreas. If you’re taking Eucreas alongside other medication you may need to have regular tests of your blood glucose and kidney function. There are some particular medications you should be aware of before taking Eucreas, and these include:

  • Glucocorticoids
  • Beta-2 agonists
  • Other diabetes medication
  • Diuretics
  • NSAIDs
  • High blood pressure medication such as ACE inhibitors
  • Medicines which affect the thyroid or nervous system

How to take Eucreas

How much of this medication you take depends on the severity of your condition and if you have any other health conditions. For instance, if you have reduced kidney function you will be prescribed a lower dose. Usually, the recommended dose for this medication is one tablet to be taken twice a day, one in the morning and the other in the evening, and both should be taken after food.

What are the side effects of Eucreas?

All medications have side effects, and some side effects are more common than others. Some of the rarer side effects affect 1 in 10,000 people whilst the more common side effects can affect 1 in 10 people. If you’re experiencing side effects whilst taking Eucreas you should stop the medication and speak to your GP to discuss alternatives or lowering the dose.

Common side effects

Side effects which affect more people include:

  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Tremors
  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Low blood glucose

Rare side effects

Rare side effects are usually more serious but fortunately do not affect many people.

Rare side effects of Eucreas include:

  • Lactic acidosis
  • Angioedema - a type of reaction that causes swelling of the tongue, face or throat, as well as a rash or hives, and difficulty breathing and swallowing.
  • Hepatitis
  • Pancreatitis

There may be more side effects which are not listed above which is why it’s always important to check the patient information leaflet for other side effects. If you’re experiencing negative changes to your health whilst taking Eucreas you should consult with your GP to see if the changes are related to taking this medication.

Is Eucreas an effective medication?

The active ingredients in Eucreas have shown to effectively reduce blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. Vildagliptin has been found to be more effective at reducing blood sugar when combined with metformin. Eucreas is particularly effective at reducing the blood sugar of those who are not able to take metformin alone.
