High Cholesterol

Ezetrol

Ezetrol is a medication taken to manage the level of cholesterol in the body. It is possibly used alongside a statin medication to reduce the amount of harmful cholesterol in the blood when adjustments to your diet are not enough to achieve this goal. The tablets are taken on a daily basis when prescribed and they ultimately help to protect vital organs from potential disruption to blood flow.

What is Ezetrol?

Ezetrol tablets are a treatment for dealing with high cholesterol. This medication reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood, particularly the type that is considered ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) as well as fatty substances called triglycerides. With the changes it makes, Ezetrol reduces the risk of experiencing a series of medical complications which high cholesterol can cause. A medication like this one is used when a patient’s cholesterol levels cannot be controlled by diet alone.

How does Ezetrol work?

Ezetrol contains an active ingredient called Ezetimibe which works by reducing the cholesterol absorbed in the digestive tract. It belongs to a group of medications known as cholesterol absorption inhibitors. Ezetrol interferes with the receptor responsible for facilitating cholesterol absorption in the small intestine.

A benefit of this change is that the amount of ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL) in your body is reduced, meaning it’s less likely to build up in the walls of your arteries and form plaque (which can obstruct blood flow to vital organs). Additionally, the levels of ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL) in the body are increased.

How do I take Ezetrol?

The recommended dose for this medication is one tablet per day. The tablet can be taken with or without food and at any time of the day. It may be best to take the tablets at around the same time each day to make them easier to remember.

You should already be on a diet to lower your cholesterol before you begin taking these tablets. This diet should continue while you are using this treatment. If you have also been prescribed a statin as well, then both that and this medication can be taken at the same time. That’s assuming of course that you understand how to use the statin correctly and you have no health circumstances that could interfere.

What are the side effects of Ezetrol?

Like with all medications, it’s possible (not guaranteed) that you could experience side effects while taking Ezetrol. The most common side effects reported include the following:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Flatulence
  • Diarrhoea
  • Tiredness
  • Headaches (when used with statin)
  • Muscle pain, tenderness or weakness (when used with statin)

Other potential side effects are uncommon, but in rare cases it’s possible that this medicine will cause an allergic reaction, which should be reported to your doctor or nearest hospital as soon as possible. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include difficulty breathing or swallowing and swelling around the face, lips, tongue and/or throat.

Can I take Ezetrol?

There are certain health-related circumstances which may make using this medication ill-advised, so you should be sure it’s safe to use Ezetrol before starting it. You should not take it together with a statin if you currently have liver problems or you are either pregnant or breast-feeding.

As a precaution, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Ezetrol if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have allergies or other medical conditions besides high cholesterol
  • You have not yet had a blood test and you plan to take Ezetrol with a statin
  • You have been told by a doctor previously that you have an intolerance to some sugars. Ezetrol tablets contain a sugar called lactose
  • You have moderate or severe liver problems. Ezetrol is usually not recommended in these circumstances

You should also inform your doctor about any other medicines you are currently taking, to determine that you are not using anything that could be influenced or interfere with the effects of Ezetrol. In particular, mention these medicines if you’re using any of them:

  • Ciclosporin
  • Cholestyramine
  • Fibrates
  • Medicines that have an active ingredient for preventing blood clots. Examples include Warfarin, Acenocoumarol, Phenprocoumon and Fluindione.

What if I take more Ezetrol than I should?

If you accidentally take a higher dose of this medication than you’re supposed to, contact your doctor, pharmacist or nearest hospital emergency department immediately. There’s a greater chance of experiencing the side effects linked with this treatment.

What if I forget to take Ezetrol?

If you forget a dose of this medication, then skip it and take the next dose due the next day at the usual time. Never take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

What if I stop taking Ezetrol?

You should speak to your doctor or pharmacist first before stopping this treatment, as doing so could cause your cholesterol levels to rise again.
