Ezinelle

Ezinelle is a form of emergency contraception. It should be taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex.

It contains the active ingredient Levonorgestrel, which works by preventing ovulation and therefore, fertilisation of an egg. Whilst this sounds similar to how everyday contraceptive pills work, it shouldn’t be used as a substitute as it isn’t as effective.

If you find that you need emergency contraception fairly often, you should make an appointment with your GP to discuss the options for long-term contraception that may be available to you.

If you need Ezinelle immediately, please visit your local pharmacy or urgent care centre, as if you order online, it might not arrive in enough time to prevent pregnancy.

What is Ezinelle?

Ezinelle is a brand of emergency contraception, intended to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.

It contains the active ingredient, levonorgestrel, which is a synthetic progestin – similar to the progesterone hormone that naturally occurs.

Ezinelle should be taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex. After this time, it isn’t effective and won’t prevent a pregnancy from developing.

How does Ezinelle work?

Ezinelle works by preventing ovulation. If your ovaries release an egg shortly after unprotected sex, there’s a good chance that it may be fertilised by sperm. Ezinelle prevents pregnancy by temporarily stopping this process.

What if I’ve already ovulated before having unprotected sex?

Unfortunately, Ezinelle won’t be effective in this circumstance. If you’ve already ovulated shortly before having unprotected sex, there’s a chance you may become pregnant. Ezinelle only prevents the release of an egg before it happens.

Can I take Ezinelle?

Luckily, most women can take Ezinelle without any severe effects, but there are some that should take caution or seek advice from a doctor or nurse before taking the medication. These include women who have:

  • An allergy to any of the ingredients of Ezinelle
  • A disease of the small bowel (such as Crohn’s Disease) that might affect how the medication is absorbed
  • Severe liver problems
  • A history of ectopic pregnancy
  • Ever had salpingitis (inflammation of the fallopian tubes)

If none of these conditions of medical problems apply to you, it should be safe to assume that you’re able to take Ezinelle to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. If you aren’t sure if you have any of the above, please seek medical advice from a doctor or nurse before taking the tablet.

There are also some other medicines that Ezinelle might interact with. This means that it could either cause undesirable effects when taken together, or one medicine might affect the potency of the other. Some medicines you need to be careful with when considering using Ezinelle include:

  • Medicines for epilepsy
  • Medicines for tuberculosis
  • Medicines for HIV
  • Some medicines for fungal infections
  • St John’s Wort (herbal remedy).
  • Ciclosporin (suppresses the immune system)

If you’re already taking any of the above medications, it’s important to check with a pharmacist or doctor to see if it’s a safe combination or how it might affect you if you take the medicines together.

What are the side effects of Ezinelle?

Ezinelle contains a large dose of hormones, meaning that it may cause some side effects after you’ve taken it. Some women find that they aren’t affected by the medication as much as others, but it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the side effects (and the patient information leaflet that comes with Ezinelle) to make sure you’re aware of any potential adverse effects. Some of the most common complaints associated with the use of Ezinelle include:

  • Nausea
  • Low abdominal pain
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Abnormal periods/cycle disturbance (temporary)
  • Tender breasts
  • Diarrhoea
  • Dizziness

More side effects are available in the patient information leaflet that comes included in your order.

If I order Ezinelle after having unprotected sex, will it arrive in time to work?

Our advice here is not to risk it. Doctor4U supplies Ezinelle for those that want to have it in case of a future emergency, or for those that are travelling abroad to a country where it’s difficult to get the medication.

If you need emergency contraception now, you can access it at any of the following places:

  • Contraception clinics
  • GUM clinics
  • Some GP surgeries (ask for an emergency appointment)
  • Walk in centres or urgent care units
  • Most pharmacies
  • Some A&E departments (should only be used as a last resort if you can’t access any of the other options)

Although we offer the option for next-day delivery, we realise that sometimes, post can be delayed or lost. Whilst this is rare, we want the best care for you and advise you to only buy emergency contraception online if you’re ordering it in advance.

Can I use Ezinelle instead of the pill?

No. Ezinelle isn’t as effective as the pill, and it shouldn’t be relied on as a method of contraception. Whilst it works in emergency situations where contraception may have failed or you intentionally had unprotected sex, it shouldn’t be used as a substitute for other hormonal contraception.

The combined pills (COCs) and mini pills (POPs) are more effective at preventing pregnancy as they stop you from ovulating every month rather than just once. This means its less likely for you to become pregnant.

Can I use Ezinelle more than once in a month?

It isn’t recommended that you use any emergency contraception more than once in a cycle. Ezinelle can be taken at any point during your menstrual cycle.

How do I know if Ezinelle worked?

The only way of finding out if Ezinelle effectively prevented an unwanted pregnancy is to take a pregnancy test a few weeks after you took the tablet. As Ezinelle may disrupt your cycle, you may not be able to tell if you’ve missed a period or not. We suggest waiting around 3 weeks after taking Ezinelle to take a pregnancy test. If the test comes back positive, you can then discuss the options available to you with your doctor.

Will Ezinelle affect my fertility?

Whilst Ezinelle can disrupt your cycle, it shouldn’t affect your long-term fertility. If you decide to have children in the future and you find that you struggle, there may be an underlying condition. Ezinelle shouldn’t affect your future ability to become pregnant.
