How does Famvir work?

Famvir contains the active ingredient famciclovir. Although there is no cure for herpes, this antiviral medicine can lessen the severity or duration of an outbreak and so reduce the symptoms.

Although Famvir is designed for those suffering from herpes, your medical history and other medications may mean it isn’t right for you.

Speak to your doctor before taking Famvir if:

  • You are allergic to famciclovir or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet
  • You have liver problems
  • You have a kidney problem
  • You have any problems with your immune system

Like all medications, Famvir may have side effects, but not everyone gets them. Common side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Itching

Take 250mg of Famvir three times a day for five days to treat a herpes simplex outbreak. Read the patient information leaflet for information if you are taking Famvir to treat a further outbreak or to prevent one from occurring.
