Femoston

Femoston is a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) used to treat the symptoms of the menopause. The menopause involves a woman’s period coming to an end and not being able to get pregnant naturally. This is a natural process that happens as a woman gets older. The menopause is caused by a change in the balance of female hormones known as progestogen and oestrogen, the ovaries do not produce as much of the oestrogen hormone. The decline in oestrogen causing the unpleasant symptoms of the menopause. The symptoms can be both physical and emotional, and for some women they can be unbearable to live with. Symptoms include mood swings, hot flushes, irregular periods, night sweats, and vaginal dryness or itching.

How does Femoston work?

This type of HRT is in tablet form and contains the active ingredients estradiol and dydrogesterone. Estradiol is a synthetic version of the natural hormone oestrogen, and dydrogesterone is a synthetic version of progestogen. Hormone Replacement Therapy replaces the oestrogen that is lost during the menopause to reduce severe symptoms caused by the declining levels of oestrogen.

How to take Femoston

You should follow the instructions given by a doctor when taking Femoston. Your doctor will decide your dose based on your medical circumstances. Femoston is taken on a 28-day cycle with no breaks between packs. For the first 14 days you will take 1 tablet a day which contains estradiol, and for the rest of the 28-day cycle you will take 1 tablet daily containing estradiol and dydrogesterone.

Who is Femoston suitable for?

Femoston is suitable for postmenopausal women who need to replace oestrogen hormone because they are experiencing severe symptoms that are hindering their daily lives. This type of HRT is suitable for women who have not had a hysterectomy and their womb is still intact.

Who is not suitable to take Femoston?

This treatment is for menopausal women only and is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Some menopausal women may not be suitable if they’re taking other medication which may interact with Femoston or if they have a health condition which could be worsened by taking this medicine.

Always tell your doctor if you have any other health condition or are taking any other medication before starting Femoston.

Femoston and health conditions

There are some medical conditions which may make Femoston unsuitable for use in some people. If you have any of the following conditions you should not take Femoston. Do not take this medicine if you:

  • Have or have ever had breast cancer
  • Have a cancer that is sensitive to oestrogens such as cancer of the womb lining
  • Have a tumour sensitive to progestogen such as a tumour in the brain
  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Have excessive thickening of the womb lining
  • Have or have ever had a blood clot in vein in the legs or lungs
  • Have a blood clotting disorder
  • Have had a heart attack, stroke, or angina
  • Have or have ever had liver disease
  • Have a rare blood problem called porphyria

It’s vital that you avoid this medicine if you are allergic to estradiol or dydrogesterone, or any other ingredient in this medicine as severe allergic reactions can be dangerous and life threatening. There are other health conditions which Femoston may pose a risk to, and this is something that will need to be discussed with a doctor. For instance, if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or asthma, this treatment may make these conditions worse.

Femoston and other medication

Before using Femoston you should tell your doctor if you’re on any other prescription, non-prescription, or herbal medicines to avoid interaction between the drugs and side effects. There are some medicines which may interact with Femoston and these include:

  • Medicines for epilepsy such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, and carbamazepine
  • Medicines for tuberculosis such as rifampicin and rifabutin
  • Medicines for HIV such as nevirapine, efavirenz, ritonavir, and nelfinavir
  • St John’s Wort
  • Tacrolimus and cyclosporin which is used, for example, for organ transplants
  • Painkiller known as fentanyl
  • Theophylline which is used for asthma and other breathing problems

These medicines may interfere with the effect of Femoston and the dose may need to be adjusted if it is being taken in conjunction with any of these medicines.

Are there any side effects of taking Femoston?

HRT has its risks, and like all medicines there are some side effects but not everyone taking this medicine will experience them. There is an increased risk of women who take HRT developing some conditions. These include:

  • Breast cancer
  • Abnormal growth or cancer of the lining of the womb
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Blood clots in the vein of the legs or lungs
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Memory loss

It’s important to discuss your own medical history and family medical history with your doctor so they can determine whether you’re at a higher risk of developing these conditions. You will be monitored throughout taking HRT with regular breast screening and cervical smear tests.

Before taking HRT a doctor will advise you on all the risks and benefits of taking this medicine. The above conditions are rare but there are more common side effects which may include headaches, abdominal pain, breast tenderness, nausea/vomiting, and heavy and irregular periods.

Other rare side effects may include an allergic reaction to the ingredients in Femoston. You may experience symptoms of swelling of the face and neck which will cause breathing difficulties. This is a serious side effect that will need medical help immediately.

There are many other side effects which you should be aware of that are detailed on the patient information leaflet, and which your doctor can inform you about. If you experience any negative changes to your health while using Femoston you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Is Femoston an effective treatment for menopause?

Femoston is one of the most common types of HRT and has improved the quality of life of many women by effectively reducing the symptoms of menopause. HRT may not be used long term and you will have regular checkups while you’re taking this medicine. For those 8 in 10 women who suffer from severe side effects of this condition, HRT has proved to be an effective and revolutionary drug in helping women during this stage of life.
