FemSeven

FemSeven patches are a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that add a hormone known as estradiol. The patches are transdermal and are applied to areas of the skin and help to reduce symptoms of the menopause which can potentially hinder day-to-day activity. While not all women experience symptoms during the menopause, treatments such as these can prove very useful if they do. FemSeven patches are applied once weekly.

What is FemSeven?

FemSeven is a type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that comes in the form of patches. The treatment is used to reduce the symptoms of the menopause and it can also be used to prevent the bone-weakening condition osteoporosis, which some women are more vulnerable to once the menopause starts. To minimise the potential symptoms of the menopause, FemSeven adds a female sexual hormone which the body naturally produces but is vastly reduced during the menopause.

As of 2019, FemSeven has been discontinued by the manufacturer which limits stock availability. FemSeven Sequi and FemSeven Conti have both also been discontinued.

How does FemSeven work?

FemSeven patches contain estradiol, which is a synthetic version of the female sexual hormone oestrogen. When a patch is applied to the patient’s skin, the hormone is absorbed through the skin and enters the bloodstream. This helps to supplement levels of oestrogen in the body overall and suppress the menopause symptoms which can cause distress.

This medication is traditionally given to patients who have had their womb surgically removed. That’s because oestrogen levels in the body left unregulated can potentially cause health complications if a woman still has their womb. However, a woman who still has their womb can still use this treatment when taken alongside another form of HRT which includes a progestogen, which helps keep oestrogen levels in check.

How do I use FemSeven?

FemSeven patches are applied to the skin once weekly on a continuous basis. A new patch replaces the existing one after seven days. When using a new patch, you should first peel off half the protective liner at the S-shaped notch before applying the patch to the skin. The other half of the protective liner is then removed and the rest of the patch is pressed against the skin for at least 30 seconds.

The patch is best applied in a place where there is the least wrinkling of the skin and where it will not be rubbed off by clothing. Your lower abdomen, hips or buttocks are some of the best areas to apply these patches. A new patch should not be placed in the exact same area as the last one. Also make sure the area of the skin you use is clean and dry and neither broken or irritated. If the patch is applied properly then it should stay on even if you take a bath, shower or swim, but avoid exposing the patch to sunlight.

What are the side effects of FemSeven?

FemSeven can cause side effects, although not all users experience them. The most common associated with this treatment includes the following:

  • Itchy skin
  • Redness on the skin
  • Eczema
  • Urticaria (hives)
  • Swelling
  • Changes in skin pigmentation
  • Headaches
  • Breast discomfort

Other and more severe side effects are a possibility but also a rarity. If you experience any side effects from FemSeven which are worrying, then contact your doctor or pharmacist. It has previously been noted that certain diseases are reported more often in women who are using HRT compared to those who do not use it. Those conditions include:

  • Breast cancer
  • Cancer of the lining of the womb
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Memory loss if HRT is started over the age of 65

Can I use FemSeven?

FemSeven is designed for women who have not had their last menstrual period in at least 12 months. While this treatment is typically used by women who have had a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), it is possible for women who still have an intact uterus to use this provided it is part of a combined HRT (with another treatment involved).

Using HRT does carry certain risks, especially if you have certain health conditions or are taking other medication already. You should avoid using FemSeven or other types of HRT if you have or have recently had any of the following conditions:

  • Breast cancer
  • Any form of cancer that is sensitive to oestrogens (e.g. cancer of the womb lining)
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • Excessive thickening of the womb lining
  • Blood clot in a vein within the legs or lungs
  • A current or recent disease caused by a blood clot (e.g. heart attack, stroke or angina)
  • A rare blood problem named porphyria
  • Allergic to estradiol valerate or medroxyprogesterone acetate
  • A liver disease which means your liver function tests have not yet returned to normal

Some medications can interfere with the effects of FemSeven or other HRTs, potentially leading to some irregular bleeding. You should let your doctor know if you are currently taking any of these treatments:

  • Medicines for epilepsy (such as phenobarbital, phenytoin and carbamazepin)
  • Medicines for tuberculosis (such as rifampicin and rifabutin)
  • Medicines for HIV infection (such as nelfinavir, ritonavir, efavirenz and nevirapine)
  • Herbal remedies which contain St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

What if I use too much FemSeven or forget to use it?

If you apply too many patches of this treatment, then you are unlikely to experience an overdose. Removal of the excess patches is all that’s required once you realise your mistake. If you forget to use or replace a FemSeven patch then this is not a major issue either, although it’s possible some irregular bleeding could occur depending on for how long and how frequently you forget. Apply/replace a patch once you remember you need to. Don’t apply two patches at the same time to make up for a forgotten dose.
