Fleet Cleen Ready to Use Enema

Fleet Cleen Ready to Use Enema is used to cleanse the bowel to relieve constipation or to prepare for a medical procedure of the bowel. The Fleet Cleen Enema can be administered by yourself at home, and once administered it quickly gets to work to increase bowel movements and provide relief from occasional bouts of constipation. Cleen Ready to Use Enema is a type of saline laxative and it helps to soften stools and makes them easier to pass after having difficulty due to constipation. This enema is laxative-free and has a pre-lubricated Comfortip to make administering easy and comfortable.

What is an enema?

An enema is a technique used to deliver liquid into the rectum to stimulate bowel movements and help you to push stools out of the rectum more easily when it has been difficult to do so because of constipation. Constipation is considered as having less than three bowel movements in a week, the stools may be larger, drier, and difficult to push out, and this may be accompanied by stomach ache, bloating, and nausea. An enema can relieve constipation by increasing the water content of stools allowing them to move through the colon more easily and out of the rectum comfortably. Enemas such as the Fleet Cleen Ready to Use Enema can provide relief from constipation and can be used to cleanse the bowel before an endoscopy, bowel surgery, or an x-ray.

How to use the Cleen Ready to Use Enema?

The Fleet Cleen enema is for self-use, however, If you’re unsure how to use this enema or you need assistance, speak to your healthcare provider for help and advice. Adults and children over the age of 12 years should use just one bottle once a day, do not exceed this dose, and do not use it for more than one week unless your doctor has said you can. Using more than one enema in a 24 hour period can be harmful so you should always stick to the dosage instructions recommended by your doctor.

Before and after using the enema, wash your hands and use disposable gloves if possible. To administer the enema, lie on your left side with your knees bent and arms rested in front of you. Remove the protective shield before gently inserting the Comfortip into your rectum using light pressure, the tip should be pointing towards your navel. Once the nozzle is inserted as far as it will go (do not force it in as you may cause injury. If you feel any resistance or you experience bleeding, stop using it immediately and see your doctor ), squeeze the bottle until nearly all the liquid is emptied and gently remove the nozzle from your rectum. You may experience some leakage but this is normal. Stay in this position until you feel an overwhelming urge to empty your bowels which should happen in around 5 minutes. Dispose of the enema and wash your hands thoroughly. Drink plenty of clear fluids to help your constipation and ensure you’re near a toilet as the enema will start to work in minutes.

If you have not had any bowel movement within 30 minutes of using this enema, speak to your doctor as soon as possible.

Can I use an enema if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Do not use an enema while pregnant unless your doctor has advised you that it is an appropriate treatment for your constipation. It is best to try natural remedies for constipation in pregnancy but if these have not worked, speak to your healthcare provider about taking medicines to relieve constipation. If you’re pregnant or think you may be pregnant always seek the advice of your doctor before using the Cleen Enema to ensure that it won’t harm your unborn baby. It’s not known whether the ingredients in this medicine pass through breastmilk and therefore it is advised that breastmilk should be expressed and discarded for at least 24 hours after using the enema.

Can I take other medicines while using this enema?

Alway inform your doctor or pharmacist if you’re taking any other medicines before you start using this medicine to ensure there isn’t a risk of interaction between the drugs. This is particularly important if you’re taking any of the following medicines:

  • Medicines that treat high blood pressure or angina such as ACE-inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, and calcium channel blockers
  • Diuretics
  • Lithium
  • Medicines that make you dehydrated or alter salt levels in your body
  • Sodium phosphates - medicines for cleaning the bowel
  • Medicines that alter the rhythm of your heart, examples include erythromycin, azithromycin, cisapride, and terfenadine. See the patient information leaflet for a full list of medicines
  • Non–steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin or ibuprofen

Are there any side effects from using this enema?

All medicines come with side effects, although not everyone who uses this enema will experience them. In very rare cases, Cleen Ready to Use Enema may cause the following side effects:

  • Allergic reaction - If you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling, difficulty breathing, and a rash, seek medical help immediately

Other ways to treat constipation

You can treat constipation through some diet and lifestyle changes, and you may be able to avoid taking any medicines but your symptoms may take longer to improve. The best things you can do to treat and prevent constipation is to add plenty of fibre to your diet as you may not be eating enough, try foods such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts which are full of fibre. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol as it is dehydrating and can cause constipation, and increase your activity as being active helps to regulate digestion at a normal speed. Another important tip to prevent constipation is to make sure you don’t ever ignore the urge to go to the toilet and you give yourself enough time to go to the toilet, holding it in can make constipation worse.

If these methods have not helped your constipation you can try medication in the form of enemas or other routes to help your stools move along more smoothly and ease the uncomfortable symptoms associated with constipation.
