Flixonase

Flixonase is a prescription medication used to treat allergic rhinitis. Flixonase contains fluticasone propionate which belongs to a group of medicines known as steroids. This medicines relieves the uncomfortable symptoms of rhinitis including sneezing, itching, runny or blocked nose, and irritation in the nose by reducing swelling and inflammation. Rhinitis occurs when the body is exposed to a substance that the immune system mistakes for something harmful and reacts too strongly.

Rhinitis can occur all year round if you’re constantly exposed to an allergen such as animal hair, or it can happen seasonally when the pollen count is high. Hay Fever is one of the most causes rhinitis symptoms. The symptoms can be so severe that medication such as Flixonase is necessary. As Flixonase contains steroids it is available on prescription and you should speak to a doctor before taking this medicine.

How does Flixonase work?

Corticosteroids or steroids are found naturally in the body, and the active ingredient in this medicine, fluticasone, is a synthetic type of steroid. Corticosteroids are used to reduce inflammation which is the body’s response when it detects a threat. Flixonase has an anti-inflammatory effect and constricts the blood vessels in the nose to reduce inflammation in the lining of the nasal passage. The chemicals that are released when the body is exposed to an allergen and cause inflammation are suppressed by flixonase.

Who is Flixonase suitable for?

Flixonase is suitable for those who suffer from persistent allergic reactions to usually harmless substances such as pollen and dust. If you’ve been diagnosed with allergic rhinitis and experience severe symptoms which hinder your daily life then Flixonase is a suitable treatment for you.

Who is not suitable to take Flixonase?

Flixonase is not suitable for everyone with allergic rhinitis. If you have other medical conditions or are taking other medications this may prevent you from using this treatment. It’s important that you inform your doctor of any medical conditions you may have or any medication you may be taking so that Flixonase doesn’t interact and cause side effects.

Flixonase is not suitable for children under 4 years old, or anyone who has an allergy to fluticasone propionate or any other ingredient in this medicine as some allergic reactions can be severe and life threatening. This medicine may also not be suitable if have had an operation on our nose or if you have an infection in your nose.

Can I take Flixonase while Pregnant or breastfeeding?

Flixonase needs to be prescribed by a doctor before taking if you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Your doctor or pharmacist can advise on the benefits and risks of taking this medicine while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Flixonase and other medication

Always tell your doctor if you’re taking any other medication that is with or without prescription, including herbal products. There are some medicines which may not be suitable to take together with Flixonase, these include:

  • Any other steroids which you have been taking for a long time
  • Antiviral medicines used to treat HIV such as ritonavir or cobicistat which may increase the effects of fluticasone propionate
  • Medicines which are used to treat fungal infections such as ketoconazole

What are the side effects of this medicine?

Flixonase does have some side effects like all medicines, but not everyone will get them. There are some common side effects which affect around 1 in 10 people and there are rarer side effects which occur less frequently in just 1 in 10,000 people. If you experience any side effects while taking this medication discontinue use and consult your doctor.

Common side effects

Side effects which have been reported in more people include:

  • Nosebleeds
  • Headaches
  • Unpleasant taste
  • Unpleasant smell
  • A dry or painful nose or throat

Uncommon/rare side effects

In rare cases the following side effects may affect 1 in 10,000 people, these include:

  • Skin reaction
  • Problems with the eyes such as pain or blurred vision
  • Damage to the nose
  • Sores in the nose

Using a high dose of steroids for a long period of time may affect the normal production of natural hormones in the body. In children this may cause problems with their growth. Your doctor will monitor this and will put you on a low dose to start to avoid the side effects of using high dose steroids.

How to use Flixonase nasal spray

Before using Flixonase nasal spray you should pump the spray a few times until it starts to spray a fine mist. Blow your nose before using the spray and then close one nostril with your finger and insert the nozzle into the other nostril. To spray, push down on either side of the pump and release a spray of the medicine as you breathe in, but breathe out through your mouth. Remember to tilt your head slightly forward as insert the sprays. Adults and children over the age of 12 are advised to spray the medicine twice in each nostril once a day, and children between the ages of 4 and 11 should spray once in each nostril once a day.

How effective is Flixonase?

Flixonase can effectively treat the symptoms of rhinitis if used correctly. You will start to feel Flixonase working after the first day and the full effects can be felt several days later. Continue to use Flixonase until you feel better, if your symptoms are easing you may be able to lower the dose to one spray. If you have rhinitis all year round you should speak to a doctor before using this medicine long term.
