What is Flixotide?

Flixotide is a medication designed for people with asthma that need regular treatment. The treatment can be inhaled with an accuhaler or an evohaler.

Whatever exact form this treatment comes in, it is taken every day in order to reduce inflammation and swelling in the lungs. This treatment is not designed to treat sudden asthma attacks (a ‘reliever’ is used for such cases) but it can help to prevent asthma attacks from occurring.

How does Flixotide work?

Flixotide contains an ingredient called fluticasone propionate, which belongs to a group of medicines called corticosteroids (also known as simply steroids). When it is inhaled, the treatment instigates what is called an ‘anti-inflammatory action’.

The medication goes straight to the lungs and opens up the airways to ease any swelling or irritation that is occurring. As a ‘preventive’ treatment, Flixotide is taken regularly by those that need it so that potential swelling or other issues with the lungs won’t escalate into a serious asthma attack during the day.

How do I take Flixotide?

Flixotide comes in three different strengths and can be inhaled through either an accuhaler or evohaler. Whichever type of inhaler is used, instructions on how to use the device correctly are provided by your doctor and in the product’s information leaflet.

The exact dosage patients will take each day will depend on how severe their asthma condition is. For adults that have mild asthma, the usual starting dose is 100 micrograms taken twice a day. For moderate or severe asthma, the usual starting dose is 250 to 500 micrograms taken twice a day. The most recommended for the stronger asthma cases is 1,000 micrograms twice a day.

Evohalers are not recommended for patients aged below 16 years old. However, children aged 4 to 16 can use this treatment when administered with an accuhaler. Bear in mind that the recommended dosages are different compared to people aged 16 and above. The typical starting dose is 50 micrograms twice a day. The most taken should be 200 micrograms twice a day.

What are the side effects of Flixotide?

Flixotide can cause side effects, although not everyone who takes it will experience them. The most commonly reported side effects associated with this medication include:

  • Thrush in the mouth and throat
  • Sore tongue or throat
  • Hoarseness of voice

Issues with your mouth and throat can be reduced with certain actions straight after inhaling a dose. These include brushing your teeth, rinsing your mouth or gargling with water and spitting it out. It is worth telling your doctor if you experience problems with your mouth and throat, but only stop taking the medication if instructed to.

Other potential side effects are more severe but also much rarer when using this treatment. You should contact your doctor straight away if you experience any of the following as a result of this medication:

  • Allergic reactions (indicated by skin rashes, redness or itchiness)
  • Severe allergic reactions (indicated by swelling around the face or difficulty breathing)
  • Your breathing or wheezing gets worse straight after inhaling this treatment
  • Your breathing or wheezing shows no signs of improvement after seven consecutive days using Flixotide

Can I use Flixotide?

It’s important that you or any children you have that may be taking this medication gets treated in the most appropriate manner, in terms of what type of inhaler is used and the dose strength it provides. Your doctor and information leaflet should cover these requirements thoroughly and it’s always best to double-check with either if you have any doubts at any time.

There are certain conditions you may have or other medicines you may be taking which could lead to your doctor advising against using Flixotide. As a precaution, let your doctor know in advance if any of the following apply to you:

  • You have previously been treated for tuberculosis (TB)
  • You are currently taking or have recently taken steroid tablets
  • You’re pregnant, breast-feeding or planning to get pregnant in the near future

You should also inform your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you are currently taking any of these medicines while planning to use Flixotide as well:

  • An antiviral medicine known as a protease inhibitor (e.g. ritonavir)
  • Medicines that treat fungal infections (e.g. ketoconazole)

How is Flixotide stored?

Flixotide inhalers need to be cleaner on a weekly basis and if they become blocked. Your information leaflet should provide detailed step-by-step instructions on how to clean your device properly if you’re not already familiar.

Keep your inhaler somewhere dry to protect it from moisture and where it is not above 30 degrees centigrade. It should also be protected from frost and direct sunlight. If you are using an accuhaler that comes in a foil wrapper, then keep it in the wrapper until you are ready to use the treatment for the first time. The wrapper should be discarded once removed.
